ipod kit installation cost

I went to my dealer last week to inquire about the new ipod interface for my 530.
They told me they had it in stock and the cost of the part + install which would take 3.5 hours would cost me around $980 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!

What did you guys pay for this install ? part + labour

Keep in mind I'm in Toronto, Canada but the US/CAD difference in exchange rate is next to nothing these days....and I converted the amounts into US funds.....

Install the kit yourself, the dealer is only needed for activation which would be a 1 hour maximum on labor.

iPod Integration Kit for e60 5-series

We give full instructions with the kits, as well as support via email/phone if needed.

Activation is only required if you don't already have a CD changer and/or do not have MP3 capabilities enabled (pre Sept 05 builds). If you are removing an existing CD changer, the adapter will plug right in and work.

I paid $275 for the part and $100 labor to have it done two weeks ago. I had the CD changer so that was removed.

Most dealers offer a 10% BMWCCA discount, so you should be able to get the part for $270, and install should be 0.75 hours labor, per the install SIB.

hmmmm.....The price of the part seems in the right ballpark give or take a few dollars, its the labor that' a little confusing.

The dealer I bought the car from mentioned about 3.5 hours in labor!!

I was wondering whether the number of hours in install would fluctuate a lot from one dealer to another or they should all be pretty standard based on an SIB ?

Do you have a copy of this SIB ???

What's a BMWCCA discount ?

Thanks

BMWCCA is BMW Car Club of America (http://www.bmwcca.org/), and most dealers offer discounts to dealers. You also get a rebate (up to $1,500) when you buy a car:

I-POD Adapater Installed

I just had my I-Pod adapter installed yesterday. It took longer than expected due to amount of software updates required but I was only charged for 1.75 hours of labor instead of the 4 hours it actually took to complete.

It cost me a total of $477.00 for the install. The parts department at my delaer told me I would get the CCA discount on the part but when picking up my car they said that they do not discount accessories. I threw a fit and they eventually took 10% off the part.

Adpater seams to work well with my Nanno. Dissapointed though that when you select the random mode feature you can not skip a song in your playlist without cancelling the random feature.

Maybe the random issue has to do with the firmware version on the nano. I remember seeing the same thing on my video iPod - skipping a song cancelled the random. But when I updated my iPod's firmware to 1.2 the random didn't work after the first song.

I backed the firmware down to 1.1.2 which is what came with the iPod and now the random keeps working even if I skip to the next song. The skip only goes to the next song but after that song is over it will select another song randomly. I don't have to select random directory again.

I've go mine installed at Maranello BMW in Woodbridge for $CAN 196 tax in.
The interface was $CAN 450 tax in so all together I paid almost $CAN 650.

We are finding that it depends on the car and software installed. Not true in all cases.

i.e. When I am listening to a directory/song in random mode and I press the steering button to advance to the next song, it advances to the very next song (the song immediately next in order of the previous song), then when the song completes it continues the random mode.

I have mentioned this to jspira and we have not figured out of it is a software issue or perhaps there are different adapter firmware versions out there.

With regard to the firmware version of the Nano, here is what I have found through testing. If you upgrade to firmware 1.2 shuffle breaks altogether. If you upgrade to iTunes 7.x, avoid the temptation to upgrade the firmware.

Question Is this the same kit BMW installs (as referenced on ipodyourbmw.com)?

Hi there,
Perhaps this is a dumb question: Is this kit you are selling, the same kit that BMW is officially installing as referenced on www.ipodyourbmw.com?

For $395 I would do it. But here in SoCal I have been quoted as much as $800. I agree with Chuck that the screen of my nano is too small and hard to navigate while I am driving.

You have a 545? I would get the MP3 retrofit for free from the dealer if you have not already done so. Then, as long as you have a CD changer to remove, the iPOD adapter is $299 and you can install yourself. It is very much a DIY job.

The only issue is if you do not have a CD changer coding is required to activate the CD changer (CD1-6) menus.

Just talked to my dealer here in Germany, Military Sales, and now there is a way to keep the CD Changer and still have the IPOD connection. I was going to get both but could not get the wife to agree.

I do not have a CD changer and I tried to have the mp3 retrofit. The dealer had it for 2 days last April and could not figure it out. I don't have nav but my production date of 06.05 is within the stated range but the dealer could not figure it out. I had them put in the aux input while it was in so I could have something.

Some dealers don't have a clue. Did you take in the service bulletin? I am attaching in case you do not have it. Sometimes it helps to show them the specific bulletin.

I will have to contact them to see if they can or if it was just a ploy to get me to buy something else. Will get back to you later.

I brought the SA the service bulletin when I dropped the car off. He made a good attempt. They had the car for two days and couldn't figure it out so I told them to put in the aux input. I go to Sterling BMW in Newport Beach and I have yet to find a really competent SA there.

Although possible, I find it very hard to believe.

In order for the car to keep the CD changer which uses the CD Menus on the iDrive, BMW would have to create another menu choice in iDrive that is iPOD specific. This is highly unlikely by any manufacturer.

The reason is, they would be in the middle when Apple decides to make a change and if your car is under warranty, BMW is forced to fix.

By having a separate adaptor, BMW can say "At this point in time, these iPODs, with this firmware will work and is supported. If you do anything else you are on your own."

Manufacturers do not want vendor specific code mixed in with theirs. The MOST bus adapter is a CD changer to iPOD converter. There is no special iPOD specific code in the iDrive software itself.

The only possible way I can think of getting both the CD changer and the iPOD to work together is to have a MOST bus "Y" cable with a switch so you can activate the iPOD or CD Changer but not both at the same time.

I am clueless why folks would need a CD changer when they have an iPOD anyway. And certainly the in dash CD will play CD's/MP3's.

In my car where the CD player once was is a box almost as large - apparently the iPod adapter. I don't see how both could fit in the car much less work together.

Chuck seems more plugged into iPod land than most - so I'm doubting that it will work. Maybe they just meant you get to keep the in-dash CD player.
