Who's car has the least options?

I'll start. I order my 2002 325i with only the CWP. But since then have added sport seats, 17's, mudflaps, and soon sport springs/shocks.

Someone with a 330Ci probably has an advantage here. That car with no options already has a fair amount of equipment that's optional on other E46s, such as sport suspention, HK stereo, 17" wheels and tires, and fold down rear seats.

Is it me?

Here is what my 320d Touring came with:

- metallic paint (an option)
- cloth interior (not an option)
- multi-function wheel (not an option on diesel)

What I had retrofitted:

- A/C
- mudflaps
- coat hanger
- OBC
- engine heater
- matt chrome interior trim

What I don't have:

- alarm (or even the sensor or wiring for it)
- foglights
- Xenons
- any "package" whatsoever
- any interesting wheels
- DSC, rain sensor, PDC

What I wish I had but am too poor to afford:

- Bi-Xenons
- SP
- Style 44s or Style 72s
- remote alarm
- Webasto gas heater for interior
- HK
- NAV (there are no CDs available for Finland)
- the 3.0 turbo diesel engine instead of 2.0 turbo diesel engine

(may I stop now?)

Did you do the OBC retrofit yourself or did the dealer do it? Was it just the 1 part??

I had it done because my car did not have the temp sensor mounted, or any of the wiring ready. That and the turn signal arm were installed, then it worked. $210 installed.

Well, you are from Florida - you aren't supposed to know what that it!

Here is a copy and paste from an earlier post on this same subject (3 weeks ago):

WEBASTO:

Webasto is a modern gasoline heater that is pre-programable from either inside the car or by remote control (even from a WAP mobile phone here in Finland - NOKIA!). It uses fuel (gas or diesel depending on the application) directly from the gas tank to heat both the interior of the car and the engine. Webasto is one manufacturer of these heaters (Eberspacher is another - if any of you ever drove VW Beetles, you may know that name).

Having BMW fit a factory Webasto on your BMW is expensive. It is also vey warm, which is a good thing with a modern BMW diesel engine. There is very little heat left over to help get things hot inside the car once the diesel engine is warm. However, BMW has developed an electrical resistance assist heater to help the E46 diesels when it gets damn cold for the (apparently) 4 diesel owners in the world. Many E39's here in northeastern Europe also have this heater help as I was told.

Sorry for the sarcasm, I just watched an old episode of Seinfeld and George really gets to me.

Another version of this is made by DEFA (I think from Norway). They make a kit that heats the engine oil, circulates heated water/anti-freeze/coolant around the water jacket that surrounds the engine case, pre-charges the battery for extreme cold starts and in some cases, allows for a normal stationary heater to be plugged in to the inside of the vehicle. This is the cheaper option vs Webasto from BMW. You must plug your car into something - your house, a pole with electricity or something, to get power to this unit.

I have the DEFA Warm Up System. If it has been plugged in for 3 hours when the outdoor temperature is -10C, my glow plug burns for about 2 seconds before I can start the engine. This also gets the cat warm quickly and makes for better fuel economy. Very nice.

There you have it.

How do we judge? By number of options? By price of options?

My car may be the winner: It has precisely one option (heated seats), which cost $500 in 1998 money.

Of course, the M3C comes pretty well equipped (HK, 6 CD, leather, RPS, sidebags, etc), but I don't have cruise control, OBC, power seats or any of that other crap.

Hmm, heated seats are not an option over here. They are standard.

Your M3c sounds pretty loaded from the start.

Cruise, OBC and power seats are crap?? I may not have power seats, but I use cruise control and the OBC every day!

I really do have a crappy BMW then!

Poop.

Funny, my sig has been mocking my car's lack of options of a month now!

I'm starting to feel rich now though, some of your cars are really stripped. In any case, I have:
- SP
- Headlamp Washers
- In-dash CD
- Auto Climate Control

No foglights, armrests, xenon's, anything. Gotta love it :thumb:

The E36 M3s were pretty well loaded--on convertibles, the only options were the OBC, power seats, and cruise control, IIRC. Sedans/coupes also had the option of a sunroof and a rear wing.

E46 M3s are more stripped: You have to pay extra for metallic paint, Xenons, leather interior, power seats, plus some other stuff. This way, the price of entry remains (relatively) low. On similarly equipped cars, though, there is a fairly staggering price difference between E36 and E46 M3s over here. Note that the MSRP on my M3C is about the same as the base price of a no-option E46 M3 coupe.

As for my language, perhaps "crap" was too harsh. Even without OBC, the M3s have external temp, which was the only thing I ever used the E46 OBC for, so I don't miss that. This is the first car I've had without cruise control in a while, but I'm not sure I've ever actually used that feature, so I don't miss it, either. Power seats are OK, but the manual ones work just fine, are lighter, and have fewer components to break.

Options 325i: metallic paint, UGO, floor matts, folding rear seats - should have ordered the moon roof as Fred Meloan suggested on another board.

BTW what is the difference between a sunroof and a moon roof? I hope that this doesn't start a long list of replies.

I think we may have a winner. Even counting Xenons as an option, that only about $1300 in options. Me with my CWP and paint am at about $1500.
