Complete MK3 upgrade instructions and software here!

I just completed this install. It took me hours to find this updated information so I am going to copy it and put it in one place. You can see the pictures here: http://www.bimmernav.com/software.htm My instructions are meant for the MK3. Here is what I have learned
-Version 25 is the latest update for the MK3 CD NAV unit and has the split screen features. If you attempt to install ver. 26 or higher you risk a blank screen that can not be recovered from. There is no benefit to the newer software as it only provides features that the MK4 unit will use.
To properly upgrade your software you should visit a BMW dealer and request them to update your Navigation software. If you would like to risk upgrading the Navigation Computer software yourself, you can follow these instructions at your own risk:
Download and install WinRAR from www.rarsoft.com . You will use this to extract the .RAR file.
Download and install http://www.slysoft.com/en/clonecd.html. You will use this to burn an image of the upgrade file to the cd for the upgrade.
Download and print the following important installation instructions.

Download version 25 BMW Navigation software from this link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=02GKUQO5 Unzip the contents of this file to a temporary folder using winrar by right clicking the file and extracting it to v25.
If required to use a cd key it can be found here: http://www.x5world.com/members/navigation/Nav_KeyCD.zip I think the CDKEY is only needed going from V16 to V22 on the MKIII Computers. It will prompt you after the install is complete if you need the cd-key. I did and I found it and installed it an hour later with no problem.

Run the clonecd application and use the BROWSE feature on CloneCD to find the temp folder. ****NOTE: As an alternate to CloneCD their have been reports of another software that works just as well. This Software called is Magic ISO, and CDs must be burned at 2x speed and Mode 2 /XA. The Mode 2 /XA seems to be the important factor here as they tried all different speeds from 2x up to 24x at Model, and non of them worked. Magic ISO www.magiciso.com We do not know any details about this other software and have not tried using it, so you are on your own.

After launching the CloneCD software Select the Write from ImageFile button (under cursor above)

Use the BROWSE feature to find the IMAGE.CCD file that you saved in a temporary folder from the zip file

Select the IMAGE.CCD file

Hit the next button to copy the CDROM with your CDR Drive

Make sure and set a SLOW speed on the CDROM write speed. I was able to get mine to read in the Navigation CDReader using a 4x speed, but others have suggested 1x speed. Also use GOOD quality CD media. Hit the OK button let it burn a CD

Download and print the following important installation instructions.

Install software update using the instructions above.

How to tell what Navigation computer you currently have.
Check this link to find out how to tell what version of Navigation Computer you have
OR
On the Main screen of your display, choose the "settings" selection. on the top right you will see the Computer version and software version: See image above SW 2-1/81. This means 2 = MKII ; 1 = single display (Not split screen) 81 = Software version 81, or BMW Navigation V 21 CD (or greater)

There is a V17.1 CD with installation improvements and a new software for MK3 without split screen (3-1/31).http://members.roadfly.org/bmw_e46_m...ins/841197.pdf The MK4 units were shipped with 4-1/10 from the factory atthe start (from 09/02 to 10/02) but this version had some known bugs and therefore BMW put the text "T20.10" as a remainder to upgrade with the V20.1 CD when available. This 4-1/10 software for MK4 has never been released on anyCDs since it was a temporary beta software they had to rushout since all cars from 09/02 would have the new DVD basedMK4 unit.So the V20.1 CD will install 4-1/12 and remove the text "T20.10" at the start up screen. The only software version that has this text is the beta version of 4-1/10 that was used at the factory for a short period while finishing the 4-1/12 that was released on the V20.1 CD.http://members.roadfly.org/bmw_e46_m...ins/841102.pdf

This is a great thread. I have followed the instructions but for some reason my MK3 unit will not eject the OS disc!

It just makes a disc access noise and the nothing. My OS seems to have been upgraded because the display looks different. Its like a pale blue colour with huge text.

Might have to ask BMW to sort this out for me!

Unhappy I think I bricked my Mk III navigation computer

Uh oh, I think I may have "bricked" my Mk III navigation computer by attempting to update the firmware using the v32 navigation software -- I have the "blank screen" that goedhart describes at the beginning of this thread!

Is there anything that I can do to revive the Mk III, or should I just start shopping around for a Mk IV online?

Thanks for any advice,

T.

Unbricked Mk III navigation computer

Just a quick update -- I was able to "unbrick" my Mk III navigation computer by rebooting it with the v22.1 Navi software update disk loaded.

Simply putting the v22 disk in didn't start the software update -- I had to power cycle the system by switching off the ignition for a few seconds before switching it back to position 1 -- but then the Mk III read the disk and installed the latest version of the software.

Software Download Site Gone..

It seems that the software download site is now gone??

I just inherited my mothers 2001 740i (with 30,000 miles on it) and one of the first things I'd like to do is upgrade the Nav.

I've got the MKIII (software displays 3-1/20)

Did anyone who has followed this thread download the software and can email it to me as the site is now gone or have another link?

Thank you

Mark

Nav Software Update

Hi Mark

I downloaded updated nav software from this site, which seems to be working fine: http://www.e38.org/nav/

I successfully updated a Mk III using the v22.1 update disk image (v22_1_CloneCD.rar), which contains the latest version 3-1/63 of the nav software for the Mk III computer, along with the unlock CD (BMW_NaviSoft_KeyCD_Clone_cd.rar).

Don't make the same mistake as I did and use the v32 disk! That bricked my Mk III -- I was very relieved when I unbricked it with v22.1 disk image.

Between them, these three links have all the information that you need:

http://www.bimmernav.com/software.htm
http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index.php/Navigation
http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all...ystem-faq.html

Good luck!

Thanks.

Tony -

Worked perfectly. Went from v16 on my MKIII to v22 in a matter of minutes.

Not sure how I feel about the split screen, but will play with it over the next few days.

Next problem.. Do you know where I can get a Region 7 (Florida) map newer than the 2001 that I have???

Thanks!

Mark

Hey Mark,

Great, glad to hear the update was successful! The split-screen function can be switched off in the Settings menu if you decide that you don't like it.

You can buy a new set of 10 x 2012 map CDs for the whole of North America directly from BMW for $199: http://store.bmwgpsmaps.com

Otherwise, you'll have to trawl around on eBay, Craigslist etc. for the individual disk(s) that you want -- there's a guy that sells them individually for about $50 each, I believe.

Cheers,

T.

Yea, found the guy on eBay who sells them individually for $39 per disk. So I just ordered one. Figued worth the shot as I don't need the rest of the United States, only Florida.

As you've been a wealth of knowledge, any experience upgrading to Bluetooth and connecting a iPhone to the car? I see the $900 kit, but a tad nervous about that kind of money..

Hi Mark,

I don't have any experience, but there's a whole forum dedicated to the topic over at bimmerforums: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...play.php?f=127

N.B. It's sponsored by Bavarian Sound Works, so obviously their DICE products feature prominently.

Since I last posted here, I've installed the Dice/Audiovox MediaBridge with DSP Adapter and 2point5 Spec Dock in my 2001 530i, which provides both iPod/iPhone audio and Bluetooth phone integration -- the whole kit was about $405 from Bavarian Soundwerks (and I have a 10% coupon code if you're interested).

Installation was relatively straightforward, following the largely very helpful videos from BSW, but there were a couple of unexpected problems that I documented in this thread over on bimmerforums:

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1811294

(Basically, they provided the too few of the wrong kind of connectors to hack the DSP Adapter into the amp's power supply, the audio track text display on the built-in 16:9 nav computer screen is all but illegible, and the plug on the spec.dock means you have to make a very large rectangular slot in the bottom of the ashtray assembly).

Anyhow, the Bluetooth integration with my iPhone 4S seems to be working very nicely now -- I can hold the phone button on the steering wheel to summon Siri and ask her to retrieve and call numbers from my address book, which is cool hands-free fun!

Cheers,

T.

I was having major problems trying to burn the files to CD.

I found the difference downloads at these sites:

http://www.neiloakley.com/

http://www.e38.org/nav/

The v32 software was about the only file I managed to burn to disc on my Mac. On this blog the writer says to install the v32 night software for the Mk3 using IMGBurn on PC.

http://e39source.com/archives/797

Anyway seeing as v32 was the only thing I could figure out how to burn on my Mac (was .iso), I tried it on the Sat Nav and yes it bricked it but I did get a display but it was blue and very basic menus and font, no version no., and did not detect the Sat Nav. Hard to eject discs from the Nav unit.

So once I got VMWare working again, having enabled the CD drive in VMware VM settings, and having installed both IMGBurn and CloneCD, I tried burning some discs using the CCD file with IMGBurn. Nothing happened.

Tried burning the CCD from V25 (on e38.org) using CloneCD (in VMware) and that worked, the Sat Nav liked it, installed it but when the bar reached 100% it just hung for ages, so I turned off ignition with CD still in there a couple of times and it finished off the installation. Then burnt the Key CD using CloneCD and that worked too in the Nav unit.

Now I'm upgraded to V25 on my MkIII and have split screen mode and different menus. Much prefer it. On the Set menu, the version display is 3-1/63. I gather there isn't that much benefit in upgrading to a higher version? I couldn't get any of the IMGBurn files to work anyway. The nav was previously at v22 I believe, although there was no split screen and no GPS signal most of the time.

The upgrade seems to have fixed the GPS signal problem as well.

Need your help! Navi Stuck on initial screen doesn't upload software

I am trying to update the software on my K3 that is currently at version 16 I think (screen shows 3-1/20) I burned version 22-1 version 27, 29 and version 32 and key cd I am following the instructions leaving the door open and ejecting the maps cd inserting the update cd I get the message "CD-rom in the ... Software will be uploaded " then nothing happens I waited an hour with each of the versions (three hours total) and still nothing. Any idea what can cause this and what the work around would be ... Obviously each time I tried the update procedure I started from scratch re-inserted maps took maps out key in position I insert update cd keep the door open ... For those ready to suggest go MKIV save your breath ...I'd do it but I have other priorities for those $$... I am just trying to get an educated advice from the community to be able to update my current unit. And I almost forgot the navi unit works just fine with 2014 CD so it is not damaged (i.e. can read cd just fine), also the CD were created properly with both cd-clone (selected data cd) and imgburn at the lowest speed. Thank you guys in advance for the help!!

The most current version that will work with the Mk III nav computer is the v22.1 update disk image (v22_1_CloneCD.rar), which contains version 3-1/63 of the nav software. Software versions above 3-1/63 will not install on a Mk III nav computer (I read this on the forum and confirmed it in practice!).
