press start button and ......B A N G!
It's my wifes car, a new 325xiT she started driving just a little over a week ago and as of tonight, well she won't go near it.
Here is the story: She stoped at the drive-in bank and as it says, "Please stop engine" she pressed the start/stop. After a few minutes and business done she pressed the start button when a very loud bang come out of the engine compartment. She did drive home and shut it off in the driveway to come tell me the story. I jumped into the car to try to replicate this, start, shutt off, start, shutt off. I did this probably five times. Then with another start it was like a gunshot went off somewhere under the dash. Well, the car is parked now. No electrical or gas smell in the engine compartment it is a complete p u z z l e. What do you guys think?

I've seen this before.
What happened is that Yosemite Sam was robbing the bank, and when she stopped at the drive-thru ATM, he crawled into the engine compartment to hide from bank security (he's very small, after all). Anyway, I'm not sure how the starter works, but I'm guessing that multiple electrical sparks on any part of the body is very uncomfortable... and we all know how trigger-happy Sam can be. Anyway, take it to the dealer and have the little bastard rooted out. |

Could be exhaust backfire, which can sound exactly like a shotgun going off. I'd take it in and have it checked...hopefully you can replicate the event at the dealer.

Sounds very much like fuel entered the exhaust sytem or built up in the exhaust system and starting the car triggered sufficient ignition to cause the bang.
Not even sure this should happen in a fuel injected car but sure sounds like that is what happened.. |

Could be the gas. What brand and octane of gas do you use?
Sure there's no diesel it by mistake?
