Alarm siren going off at random while driving (long thread)

I was in a Car accident last year; I was rear-ended hard enough to break both tail lights. Everything was fixed, except a month later my car alarm siren goes off at random while driving.

COOL feature, especially if it goes off while tailing a ricer. I swear it went off while I was behind this tricked out Acura, the guy swerves, throws something out his passenger window, and canít stop looking around all worried like. Not to mention the time I was on a collage frontage road and I cleared traffic when the siren went off. These sound very similar to the police sirens.

Knowing that I canít have this unpredictable feature for very long, I made an appointment with the stealership. Insurance covered the repair, the General Module was replaced.

5 months has passed, it's now June, Guess what. Car alarm siren is going off while driving the car again! CRAP!! I take it back to the dealership, after waiting 45 days for the first available appointment, and they charged me $180 bucks to trace some wiring. Because I pulled the fuse for the alarm, they had to unplug the siren so that they could get some real alarm codes.

After driving my car around with no alarm siren plugged in, I scheduled another appointment and waited another 30 days. Guess what, there werenít any codes associated with the alarm. So they told me to buy a new siren.

I put the new siren in, and the problem is now worse, I couldn't even finish the install without almost puking my guts out from having my head in the wheel well with no ear protection.

So here I am today, scheduling another appointment for December 5th, almost a complete year from the original problem. I hope they refund me for the siren I obviously didn't need.

CRAP.. What do you guys think it could be? I'm leaning on pinched wiring, except the mechanic told me he already ruled that out. Maybe the general module broke again? If anyone has any ideas.. PLEASE help!!

Definitly a tough one. Sounds to me like you've become the owner of a white elephant wrt the Alarm system. I would seriously consider disabling the alarm system or be prepaired to invest money & time to this issue. A pinched wire sounds like a good start, but to track down an intermittiant electrical problem is a very hit and miss for the Technician.

the hood switch near the driver side in cabin filter is known to fail. try unplugging it and see if the condition improves.

Not a switch

The alarm isn't going off, only the siren. This is what perplexed the tech. If the Alarm were truely going off, the lights would be flashing and it'd log a code in the computer. However, the siren just sounds whenever it feels like it. Most of the time while driving.

Is the alarm going off (lights flashing along with siren) or is the siren just sounding. Is this happening while driving or while the car is parked and the alarm is armed (car locked using key remote?)

Let me know, Because there are solutions for the latter problem.

Just out of curiosity, when you had your general module replaced, how much did that run you? I fear mine may have started to fail.

General Module Pricing

I didn't have to pay for it. The Auto Insurance covered it because they felt that it was damaged in the accident. I'm not sure how much it would cost.

My car alarm will go off by itself when parked and armed. Not sure what this issue is caused by. Anyone have any ideas?

Sensor disable

Disable your interior sensor by pressing the lock button twice. Once to lock and arm your car, twice to disable the interior sensor. Also, many have found that the hood switch or trunk switch is defective and causing the false alarms.

If you take your car to the stealership, they'll pull the alarm codes and tell you what caused the alarm to go off.

Don't have a £ key?

Your battery, or the alarm backup battery sounds like it's failing. Have the battery in the trunk tested, if it's bad, replace it. Don't put power through OBD2 ports; they're not designed for it! The alarm senses if the battery is "being tampered with" and sounds, which could be happening. Better yet, head over to the X5 section and ask there (ina new thread) instead of resurrecting a four year old thread. If not battery related, the hood switch could be the problem.

HAHAHAHAH I know what you mean! I would try following the wires from the alarm for a little while. One of them might have gotten pinched in the accident and is causing some sort of short.

I have no input, but this thread makes me laugh. The concept of scaring people on the highway with a siren that appears to come from nowhere is great. I would personally just unplug the siren and leave it. You could invest more money than the car is worth trying to resolve a problem that is irrelevant to the performance and safety of the car. Accidents cause more mysteries than meet the eye. Hence the value in an accident free car.

have you refreshed/checked your battery? being a 540, all fixes are temporary until they parasitically strain the owner
