Your car explodes when you turn it on and you die in a fiery explosion.

that's when you sell the car. Driving this car is like driving driving on a frozen lake, it's only a matter of time before something will go wrong.

The dealer knows that it will cost them much, much, much more money to fix things that go wrong with this car than they could make selling an extended warranty...that's why they dont offer it.

All 2002 owners will be required to release their 7 series back into the wild in early 2008. Mine expires in April so I will be going on a hunting expedition in Jan Feb Mar for a replacement. Do the current 7s have a 6yr 100k warranty also or just 02/03?

2004's do not.

But you can buy an extended srvice plan for around $1200 that will cover an additional 2 years and up to 100k

I would wait for the new 2009 7 series if I were to keep the car that long!

How do you get an aftermarket extended warranty? Anyone know of any reputible companies out there? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.

Overall the 7's seem to be pretty reliable mechanically. It's all the electronics going bad that seem to happen more often. It's things like the ventilated seats, power open trunk, soft close doors, Logic7, iDrive, Bluetooth, Parking Sensors, etc. that every aftermarket warranty I've seen would not cover. It'd still be nice to have the cooling system, drivetrain etc. covered, but even with a warranty I'd guarntee you'll still have out of pocket expenses.

There are more BMW's on the road without a warranty than with. As with any car, decide your pain point for repairs/maintenance and unload when it becomes too much.

IF you can find an aftermarket warranty and it's less than $3k it probably would be worth provided you plan on keeping the car for several years past the factory warranty. Hell, my friend has a 2002 Audi A6 that needed a new water pump at it was 8 hours labor! Total bill was nearly $900 for a water pump! Not sure it would be that expensive on a 745 but I'm sure it'd be close. His car had an aftermarket warranty so it was covered. Also keep in mind that the highest labor rate I've seen on an aftermarket warranty is $70/hour. Being that the dealers are $85 and up, you'll have to make up that hourly difference or find an idependent shop for the repairs.

You're best bet might be to ask a used car lot to sell you a warranty. They will make money off of it since you aren't buying a car from them, but that's to be expected.

autoclub.com is a no go if you reside in California, here is the message from there website.

The State of California has passed legislation that prohibits quoting or selling extended service contracts (extended warranties) to California residents by anyone other than the selling automobile dealer. In order to comply with this legislation of your state, we are unable to provide price quotes or offer to sell extended service contracts to California residents

That sucks. It looks like the CA Motor Car Dealers Association (CMCDA) did some heavy lobbying in CA so now they have a monopoly.

I was recently solicited for an extended warranty & maintenance for $4300, which extended the 6 year, 100,000 miles by 4 years and 60,000 miles. Let me know if you want the contact, I will post. Seems to pricey for me...and will keep my car for a few more years and will likely 'self insure' and cross my fingers.

Outside of a wierd gas tank problem and a waterpump, both covered under warranty, my early build 2002 has been pretty solid.

Steve,

Check theautoclub.com

They quoted me like $3,200 for bumper-to-bumper.
