check engine light 1421/1423 error code

My check engine light just came on and i ran the codes and it gave me a 1421 and 1423. does anyone know what the issue can be. i took it to a shop and they said it could be the Air mass Meter, or Air Pump. is this true or if anyone has had this issue how did they fix it.

I'm going through the same thing (P1421 / P1423) with a '97 328i that I bought this week. From researching the forums, you can pretty well bet it's either the non-return valve mounted to your exhaust manifold or the air pump or both. Check ebay for BMW OBDII air pump if you want a picture of what to look for. With the engine cold, disconnect the hose from the outlet of the pump and turn the engine on. The air pump should sound like a turbo fan and should be blowing out of the discharge. If it's not bad, don't hook the hose back up until you check the valve. I'm going out to check the valve this afternoon, so if I figure out anything, I'll update.
