535i ED June 2008

This was a much better experience than buying a car from a regular dealer. You're treated like royalty at the BMW welt. It is a very nice experience, unlike some of the unpleasant experiences at the regular dealerships. Just got a 535i 2008.

Advice for those who are going:

1) Definitely get the navigation DVD from Beewang. It is a life saver in Europe.

2) Call your hotels/destinations in advance and ask them about parking. I had underground parking in my hotel the whole time, so I never worried about the car. But the garages in europe are very small. I could barely squeeze the car in. Ask about their parking situation and how big their garage is to accomodate your car.

3) You can buy the vignette (the toll sticker for austria) as you get closer to the Austrian border at a rest stop. It was about 7.60 euros.

4) The hotel that is recommended by BMW european delivery packet is just okay. It's not super-nice, and it's right across the street from a strip club. It is, however, two blocks from the train station, and it's cheap. If you want a nicer hotel, more luxurious hotel, then look for one on tripadvisor or hotels.com.

5) Learn the parking laws in the city that you're going to. They can be confusing and strange. You can read up on how to pay for street parking on the city's internet website.

6) Gas is around 1.5 euro/liter as of June 2008, so be prepared to spend lots of money on gas.

7) If you drop off your car at another city besides Munich, it may not actually say, "BMW" on the facility. We circled for about 30 minutes around a series of warehouses before finally getting out, wandering around, and finding out where it was. It just says "autoservice", and there is no BMW icon at all. This was for the Vienna dropoff.

I'd like to see your pics, but the site has been "temporarily" out of order for the last several hours. Do you know what gives?

I found out that too much traffic has passed through the website this month (?????) I guess it is to prevent someone from using the website for commercial gain. Never knew I had this limitation! It will work on August 1st. Be sure to check back!

That was a great post. You looked like you and your family had a phenomenal time. I picked up my 535i in June, but I'm heading back to Munich for a conference. I never got to see the BMW factory tour. They say it's 2.5 hours (and it starts at 11am, so you probably could be starving through it). Do you think it's worth it? Any other must-see highlights in Munich?

I took the Dingolfing factory tour, I believe it started around 1 or 2 pm, and was about 2.5 hours. Worth it?

JA!

Very worth it - just go up to the premium lounge and "fill up" before your tour!

Nicely done. A bit too many head shots, perhaps, but I'm sure the kids will appreciate that.

Mein Auto: MBW 128 Convertible
Germany-Austria-Italy-France

Took a red eye to Munich. Stayed downtown within walking distance to sites and wandered around for the day. Got a good night sleep and picked up the car early.

Would recommend buying the high end Tom Tom which comes with Europe maps. I did not have one so had a rougher time navigating especially out of Munich. I met up with family who had purchased one before the trip and it was amazing. $400 for a tomtom you can use in any car and upgrade easily is probably better than the $2000 built in navigation from bmw which I hear is difficult to use.

Drove through Austria and northern Italy down to Venice. Northern Italy was beautiful. Wish I had taken some time to explore. Parked in a covered garage near the water taxis at the Venice airport. No problems when we came back 3 days later.

Rented a villa for a week and explored Tuscany. Towns on top of hills are surrounded by walls. Hint, always park outside the walls ( look for a sign with a P). Inside the streets are narrow and congested. You will enjoy yourself more if you walk.

Drove to Rapallo, on the Italian Riveira, which was also tough to navigate through. No road signs in Italy. Made sure the hotel had good safe parking and took the train and ferry to explore cinque terre and portofino.

Drove to Nice, France for drop off and explored the French riveira. Hard to find the drop off. Again no road signs. It was down a long drive next to a chain link fence with small signs on it. Looped around 4 times before we saw the sign. Next time I bring a TomTom. Don't forget your purchase order!!! You need it for drop off.

We took off the front tag and brought it home. Was happy to find the rear tag in my trunk when the car showed up in the US.

Needless to say it was the trip of a lifetime driving my bmw convertible through Europe. I think i will have to do this again!

3083 miles in 5 countries - complete report on our ED

I finished the write-up and added more photos on our Sept 10 ED:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=319392

Total driving is 3083 miles with my wife and my son who turned 5 during the trip - his birthday is also the ED delivery day and we celebrated it in the Welt center. The average is about 81mph with avg 26.1 mpg on mixed local/highway. The gas price is ~1.4euro/li ($10/gallon).

We stayed in 10 places in 5 countries during 16 days:
Monday 9/8/2008 fly Lufthansa from Boston.
9/9/, 9/10/2008 Munich, Germany - Neuschwanstein Castle – Frankfurt
9/11/ Sankt Goar
9/11,12 and 13 Paris, France (3 nights)
Sunday 9/14, 15 Interlaken, Swiss (1 night)
9/15, 9/16 Milan, Italy via B11 - Susten Pass (it was snowing!) (1 night)
9/16, 9/17 Cannes – Nice – Monaco (1 night)
9/17, 18 and 19 Florence, Italy (2 nights)
9/19, 20 and 21 Roma (2 nights)
9/21 Venice (1 night)
9/22 Vienna, Austria (1 night)
9/23 back to Munich and drop-off the car at Harms.
Wednesday 9/24 Oktoberfest! and back home
