318i Door Hinge

First off my daughter is doing well with her 5-speed manual transmission. We made our way through the busy drive-through at DQ last night (a bit of a test in my mind) and she did well.

My wife and I are also having a blast "borrowing" her drop top from time to time.

I was pleasantly surprised that the car passed MD emissions testing last week with nothing more than a tank of premium fuel and a couple hours of hard running in preparation.

But, as one might expect with a 160K car there are (thankfully) small problems from time to time and here's the latest.

Not the hinge, but the assembly that keeps the driver's side door from turning freely on its hinges, has come apart. The pin connecting the assembly fell to the ground and the bar that reaches from the door to the frame has retreated into the door. I grabbed it with a set of pliers but it doesn't want to budge. Could this just be because it is retained by some kind of super strong bad ass spring?

Below are pictures of the broken assembly, the pin and the same (working) assembly on the passenger side door. Any insight or suggestions are welcome.
