How i know my battery is going bad... some tall tell signs

since it's coming up to winter for most of us (well, some of us), here's something i noticed about my battery getting weak:

1: the steering wheel doesn't come down when starting the car.
2: radio doesn't work (i have nav radio so YMMV)
3: pretty obvious but slow crank

past couple of days, i noticed how these things when i start my 540. the problem is, i drive only a mile and a hair more each way to class and back so it's not getting driven enough to charge the battery. i drove to brewster (about an hour each way) last night to give it a long drive and today i went to ghetto mall, again, about an hour round trip.

i got the autozone battery last year i think so i'm going back to get a new one this week.

i unlocked my OBC and yep, i'm giving out 13.6V on the alternator but still not enough.

Get a charger and run it in trickle mode for a couple of days each month.

BTW, those are "tell tale" signs.

Hi Dan,

It's funny you brought this up. . . I just replaced my battery yesterday.
It had an old Interstate battery that was not starting up the car in the cold.
The new unit is a Bosch. . . but I am not sure how well it's going to perform.
I am just hoping that it's not the alternator that died. . .

On mine I could see a "pulse" in the stereo display and the CD started skipping, then would crank longer to start, then wouldn't start at all. Replaced it yesterday.

Trickle charging is EASY! Walmart sells the Black and Decker "smart charger" in a 2 amp version WITH a cigarette lighter adapter. Just plug into your cig lighter socket, run the cord out the door (yes, you can safely close the door on the cord) and plug it in. The B&D unit is only $18!!! This unit is microprocessor controlled like the BMW factory accessory one that sells for $70.

I use a simlar Griot's Garage 1.5amp unit that I spliced on a cigarette lighter adapter from Radio Scrap....but same idea.

i have hte BMW trickle charger (from a Z8) but i just don't have the ability on a weekday to run a cord from the garage to the car anymore since my landlord, out of the blue, decided to park her car back on the driveway again (NY car). on and off.. never consistant. kinda sucks. going ot have ot figure something out about this.

Hey chivas, good luck with the battery.

Just a word of advice, if your daily trips are that short, you arent really getting your engine oil up to normal operating temps for long enough times to burn off condensation, etc in it. If thats your normal driving, you may want to go to frequent oil changes, even using a non-synthetic every 5k.

i'm using amsoil euro blend every 5K miles and i'm actually going to the Series 2000 after this every 5K miles as well...

note taken.. never thought about the condensation part. i'm starting to let mine idle for 10 minutes before i drive now. it's seriously a short drive and i think the 325iX will come into play later on as a better way of getting around.

Are you sure your belt isn't too loose and slipping? You might want to check the water level in the battery if you haven't done so.

i justed had to jump start my car yesterday. I have'nt driven the car in about a week, I went to drive it and i couldnt even get in the car the door was locked. It wouldnt even open with the key, I had to pop the trunk and put the jumper cables on the battery so i could get in the car.Thats one thing I'm not too fond of about this car.

LOL! The doorlock doesn't need the battery to work.

Cheers,
Bill

Insert the metal thingie at the end of the key fob into that strange slot in the door handle and turn hard.

I think I was relatively polite. I could have written one of the following:

* RTFM, newbie!
* Do you have a remote fob for the front door of your house?
* How the heck did you figure out how to get into the trunk?
* Are you old enough to drive?

Being the kind-hearted soul that I am, I spared you the immense humiliation of being subjected to such well-deserved ridicule.

Oh, you are welcome.

Cheers,
Your "interent" comedian - Bill
