"4 door m3 = joke its a sports car, it's not for taking the kids to a soccer game..."

"and from the pictures I like the 2 door alot more..."

jonb23, jonb23, jonb23...where to begin? Everyone is allowed a brain fart based post once or twice but this....Soccer game? Pictures?? What is this? To slander one of the absolute greats with no first hand experience? You have obviously never driven a E36/4 to say nothing about actually owning one. Fast, comfortable, totally accessible handling...what is not to like? The ONLY car I regret selling.

The sports car comment is so far off I do not know where to begin. BMW sedans are all about NOT being a sports car. As in Corvettes. Ferraris. You know - those twits blocking the far left lane. Going 60 while looking at themselves in the mirror. As in - nice car...you are obviousy divorced or heading there. Love the chains and toupee. The M3/4 was good at leading "sports cars" into increasing radius on-ramps just to watch their drivers almost bin it. And they almost did. Everytime. Unbeliveable. That is what the M3/4 was all about. And it was awesome. Get a ride in one some time. You'll like it.

My STI is four door and I'll take on an e46 M3 any day of the week!!!

I would be very interested in the 4 door M3. The Sedan 3 series has always out sold the coupes.

I don't think an STI would have any problem smokin' an M3.

It all comes down to what you want. Do I want a loud unrefined pumped up econobox? Maybe if I was 16.

At 34, I'll pass.

No I mean the e46 M3 that I have beaten many times at auto x's and at miller sports track. You may not know what an STI is, but I can tell you that the M3 does not have the torque or 4wd to even get close to the STI. Not to mention my car is a COBB Stage 2 (350 HP and 380 lb ft torque) with lowered springs and monstrous sway bars. However I beat many an M3 while my car was completely stock.

Yep the STI is a very RAW car, that's why I am selling it and have ordered a new 335i Sedan for a May 4th ED. Can't wait!!

If it weren't for the $20k difference in price between the 335i and the 08 M3 I would wait. However I want a Sedan and for less than the price difference you can easily make the 335i as fast as a stock 08 M3. That's the beauty of a turbo engine. It's Easy to make bigger HP and way bigger torque. In fact the 335i already makes as much torque in stock form as the 08 M3 will.

Big torque wins every time.

Dude, I know what an STi is... and unfortunately the U.S. version is watered down. Would love to drive a Spec C. That said, I was joking around with the fact there was no 4dr E46 M3 and suggested the ZHP came closest (since the thread is about the E90 M3 sedan). That said, the purpose of the M3 is not to be a track day special, but to provide an every day car able to perform well on the track. Where cars like the STi and the even better EVO MR are basically rally car weapons watered down for the road, the M3 starts life as luxury sport sedan/coupe and evolves into a sports car... like all M cars, for the most part

Remove the weight, forget about engine decibles and let that 3.2L inline 6 breath and we'll have different story, but it wouldn't be a BMW nor an M car for consumer purchase. It would be a race car for track duty.

And often, in a race of similiarly bracketed cars, its the driver who determines if he wins, not the car. So kudos on being proficient on the track and obviously a good driver.

Yes, the V8 is going to bring on the torque... interesting why BMW is so tight-lipped on the number... but it still will have the added weight of being a luxury performance car instead of a purpose built track weapon.

A stock STi is definitely not faster than an E46 M3 on a track like the Nurburgring. A spec C would be faster, definitely.

Not sure how the US STi is watered down, the Spec C is not the normal STi anywhere.

I always think it is funny when people compare cars with mods against cars without.

Stock to stock, M3 wins all day.

I don't know who was driving the M3 but no way you win at stock levels with a real driver, even with all those mods you make one mistake and M3 wins with a real driver.

I also owned a US STI, Euro Spec STI is totally different animal though.

Peace

Rick

I'm normally all for 4 doors on sport hatchbacks such as the GTI/A3/S3 but as far as the
M3 goes, definitely needs to remain in coupe form or else it takes away from what it is in a sense.

I dont like 4 seats, let alone 4 doors. However, if one of you gets an m3 sedan, put a ps3 and two lcds in the headrests and drive me around a bit. thx

BMW is learning that they can sell more cars if they simply add a couple doors. With the AMG and the Lexus IS-F they have no choice if they want to compete.
I agree. Plus, I personally like the 4 door version better than the coupe. To me, the M3 sedan is a smaller version of the M5, in both looks and performance. And, that's what I am looking for!

Alex,

Thanks for sharing!

The sedan version of the M3 is appeals to me more than the coupe. Would love to get behind the wheel on the M3 sedan!

Well, for the first time ever, I think the 4-door 3 is better looking than the coupe. I already felt this before the M3 came out. I think the E90 is totally awkward and Japanese looking. So, put me down for a four door.

It's also totally ludicrous to say "if you want 4 doors get an M5." The M5 is significantly bigger and more expensive. So, less fun to drive and more expensive. I don't get the rationale at all.

Do you know which series is the only one in the current BMW production line-up without the shark fin?

M3 Coupe vs Sedan Looks

Long time BMW owner...must say it took me a long time to ever warm up to the current M3's appearance, but this new M Coupe is horrible looking, esp in that color and those wheels. Car looks very unfinished, which perhaps it is, both in the rear valences and the goofy chrome side gill. The car has an ungainly stance. I find the pics of the sedan to be more attractive. All subjective of course.
I for one passed on the current M3 due to lack of 4 doors and the questionable SMG. The 335i is holding me over until the M Sedan hits, or the CLK63 AMG Black series bows with good handling characteristics.

Off topic, but BMW couldnt get 300tq out of a V8? Good lord.

I used to have a 2005 S4 Avant and i can tell you this...
I will choose a M3 Wagon over a M3 Sedan over a M3 coupe.

The only reason for that is, I am a married man with a baby girl to due soon. (If I am 10 or even 15 years younger, i will only use the coupe.)
