The pump might be on it`s way out....is it original to the car ? Is it making moaning & groaning noises ?

Regards,
Bob

I have a 2002 325I and it is doing the same thing all of a sudden for about the last week and a half. My mechanic, who specializes in Mercedes and BMW, said it is the power steering pump. He said they had another customer with the same symptoms and same car and after changing out fluid, checking for leaks and changing out hoses, replacing the pump was the only fix. I always thought the pump either worked or it would quit altogether. The mechanic said they can start going bad and produce these symptoms until they finally go all the way. I have changed out the fluid (siphoning out the old, making sure to use ATF) with no permanent improvements. Getting my new pump installed Friday! Also replacing all the belts since they're all coming off anyway!

Same symptoms here, started after I fixed leaky P/S hoses. Not sure if the two are related, but it is time to replace your P/S pump. Say bye bye to $400 if you DIY, if not probably $600 plus....

I have no idea where he got it. He just said it was a rebuilt BMW pump. He only gets them from places where he KNOWS who rebuilt it. When I was checking around, Advance Auto Parts said they could have me one delivered for $140.00. I was tempted, but my mechanic said I may get lucky & not have problems, or I could get f#@ked. I went with his knowledge and experience! .....and come on to Arkansas! ....and bring ANY coach! lol

My friend tried advance, orileys and autozone and all 3 allowed him to pay for it but later refunded his money saying there werent any rebuilt ones to be had. I got lucky on mine I guess.

personally,I would have checked the pressure the p/steering pump is putting out.the fix could be as simple as a $10.00 part.there is a check valve on the other end of the pressure hose right before it goes into the power steering rack as pictured on this diagram :

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...58&hg=32&fg=20

item number 6 on the picture.i have had this banjo bolt with a check valve fail, its a good idea to replace this when you get the pump replaced or get the system drained when power steering work is performed.

I will mention this and show it to my mechanic if it's alright with you BMW Tech. I am lucky to have him close to me. All he does is BMW & Mercedes and you always leave his shop knowing the problem was FIXED RIGHT. If he is not aware of this possibility, he'll be glad to learn it.

My 325 is also having the same issue. I got my part from Advance Auto Parts. Was very reasonable and is less than $200 so far.

I also changed the lines and the deposit. Works really nice I did it my self, 2 hours after was driving no sounds at all and very smooth driving

Alot comes down to what brand you are getting via ebay. Many good deals can be had but in the end you get what you pay for in many cases.

Make sure you know which pump is currently installed on your car. There will be a label on the pump indicating whether it is the LF-20 or LF-30. This label is often visible from the top of the engine bay. There are also visual cues that will help you identify the pump - check the power steering hoses/flush DIY by Starless for more details.

If you are upgrading from the LF-20 to the LF-30, you will need a new pressure hose to go along with it. This would be a good opportunity to change out all of the hoses and the reservoir.

exactly, Go by what your label shows not what a write up says as you can have either or.

You're better off buying used from a junkyard than some of the ebay cheapos. Again "you get what you pay for"......

Old thread I know, but my power steering pump "groaning" is getting to me. While it hasn't failed yet, I want to replace it before it actually goes out. FCP Groton has a tempting deal on a new unit:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exe...Pump+1999-2001

Have any of you had experience with this sepcific pump? I would rather not roll the dice on a used unit from a salvage yard. Are there any companies that rebuild PS pumps? It wouldn't be a problem for me to not have one car while it is being rebuilt...
I'm leaning towards buying the pump from FCP along with the $20 lifetime warranty.

It's a knock-off, not the LUK. Good luck.
