ISSUE: Door popped Open while driving

I have an 07 X3. A little over a month, less than 1K miles on it. I was driving it today and ran over a bump on the road. I heard a "thump" immediately after going over the bump. I didn't think much of the sound until I looked on my dash and saw the symbol light up telling me one of the doors was open. I didn't believe it.

I turned around and noticed the interior lamp was lit indicating that either one of the doors or the trunk was open. I pulled over as soon as I could and got of the car. I went over to the right rear door and sure enough it had popped open. To clarify, the door did not swing wide open. It just unlatched from it's 'closed' position. The setting on my car locks all the doors once I accelerate above 20 mph. If my doors had been unlocked the door might have swung wide open.

I am positive the door was properly closed when I started driving it today. I rarely open the right rear door and everything was fine until I hit the bump on the road, which somehow caused the door to unlatch. I remember reading on a forum about a person with a 5 series whose door just suddenly popped open while he was driving. Seems like the same problem. If it happens again I'll take it in to the dealership, but I'm guessing it's just a random fluke.

Other than that the car has been flawless, Very smooth and comfortable to drive. The comfort seats are great and the thick heated steering wheel really helps in the Chicago winter.

It happened to me once within the first months of owning my 05 X3. Hasn't happened since. In my case I wasn't sure I had closed the door properly.

Did you try re-driving over the same area see if it happens again?

Thanks for your post.

I am going to have to drive over this same bump plenty of times since it is right before the on-ramp to the highway. The bump is unavoidable. If it happens again I'll let you know.

Ever been on 40 heading west out of OK City? That streatch is so bumpy I thought I was giong to have to stop. No problems with doors opening though

I do have one door, the left passenger, that doesn't close as easily as the rest. Just barely. Not a real concern or anything, I don't slam my doors closed and this one just needs a little more oomph. What I'm thinking is that your right rear passenger door might have not quite fully latched and the bump jarred it open. For your sake I hope that was all it was and if not I hope you get it fixed easily.

Thanks for posting this but it's the first time I've heard of this problem since the X3 has been around. GL!

Me too

It happened to me once within the first few weeks with my left rear door. I think it may not have been closed all the way (latched) but it looked closed. I remember thinking at the time that I wasn't sure if I closed it fully. It takes a little getting used to the sound a fully closed door makes on the X3. I haven't had any other occurrences though. Hope this sets your mind at ease.
