X5 production hold
BMW has put a hold on the release of Oct.,Nov. and Dec. X5 production units at the factory. Anyone have more info as to why they are not releasing these vehicles?

Checked on my X5 sked for a 16 Jan build. I asked about the production hold and the rep knew nothing about one. Said they do close the line down for a period in December, but no hold as far as he knew.

My dealer told me that BMW sent out a memo to all dealers.

Any chance that we'll see that memo posted here? Or at least some info on the issue?

The dealer's explaination was....They(BMWNA) are saying they are experiencing some inconsistencies in the releasing of the X5 product from plant Spartanburg and are not stating why...

I don't know if they are Bsing. I am not sure why they would. They have told me my vehicle is now in "production mode" (whatever that means). I am supposed to take delivery Feb. 15th give or take a couple of days.

Confusing! The memo seems to blame a weather/transportation delay, while my CA has indicated that my X5 was in a Assembly Finish/Post Production Quality Check "hold" - somewhat different than the explanation in the Canadian memo... I wonder if anyone can shed some light on what the Quality Assurance issue in South Carolina is... Eg. they built the whole car and then realized that they forgot the engine...Steering Wheel... etc...Haha.

Vancouver BC had a strike at their local port (Annacis Island), that caused a general backlog for all product shipping through there....
There were some Oct/Nov/Dec X5's that were held at plant post-production, but I have not seen any official memo other than to say that they are working through these vehicles as quickly as possible. There is no way to predict which of these vehicles will get finished first. We have had normal Dec production (ie. off the line and shipped) X5's already delivered retail while we still await Nov vehicles. I think we are at about 75% of the backlog completed. |

Inconsistencies...yes!
Some of you may not have noticed, but the interior picture of my X5 (Dec 22 delivery at BMW Performance Center) shows Dark Bamboo on the dash and Light Poplar for the two strips that flank the gear shift.
http://homepage.mac.com/kaleocarter/...toAlbum12.html How is it that the assembly line associates, the test driver of the vehicle, or the delivery specialist didn't see this mistake and have it corrected before delivery? Apparently my X5 sat waiting for me for 2 weeks, plenty of time to correct the mistake at the Performance Center (which also acts as service department for many of the local dealers near Spartanburg. There are definitely production inconsistencies...but this will always be the case for new models, in any industry.

My dealer is so secretive of the information from BMW. He won't even give me a straight answer on status except to say that it is in "production mode". I have the production # and called BMW Canada customer service and they told me they do not have that type of info and to call the dealer. Anyone here in Canada that can run my number?

I spoke to my dealer yesterday concerning my X5 and he stated that BMW had "a part that had to be replaced on X5's produced between two certain production dates and thus they were holding those until the replacement was installed". He has one customer that has had one at the factory for four weeks now since it was completed and it still has not been released whereas it should have been delivered over two weeks ago. Supposedly everything after a certain date has been going through and are being delivered. Thats all I know.

Seeing that I am purchasing this car largely because I want a safe mode of transport for my infant... I'm wondering why I feel nervous all of a sudden... hopefully someone will be able to identify the "part that had to be replaced" and I'll be able to know its something minor...but four weeks on quality control hold? How minor can that be? Geez. I'd have lost patience and requested to reorder...

Read on one of these forums about a guy with a new X5 that had a failed fuel pump right after delivery and took awhile to get spare. This the possible cause of the hold?

I'm not sure about the production hold! I ordered the X5 4.8 around the second week of November.... It's waiting to be released to the carrier, today.

As of 2004, the BMW brand had over 3,100 locations in its dealer network around the world, importers in 120 countries, and web portals specifically built for 70 countries. Add to that a 2006 worldwide production network (for all BMW Group models) at over 22 sites in 12 countries on four continents.
Then prouduce & deliver over 1,070,000 BMW brand vehicles in 2006 sales to imagine the expert logistics, supply and product management systems, and how many vehicle configurations with each country having different combinations of standards, features, options and packages. I'm surprised there aren't more hold ups.
