Mein Auto: 1998 M3 Dakar Yellow II
Just joined

Hello everyone, I just joined this forum and wanted to share a couple pics of my 98 m3, lemme know what you think

It has....Supersprint muffler rear section with DTM tips ( discontinued I believe), OZ mito wheels w/ Michelin ps2 tires, Rieger eyelids painted to match, H & R coilover setup, Turner motorsport camber arms, m3 GTR front corners.

I haven't taken a lot of pics yet but more to come when I take it out of winter storage.

Not a fan of the Dakar Yellow but she still looks pretty mean with the add-ons you've done.

Nice work!

Haha thanks guys appreciate the input, ya I will say that with both the Dakar yellow and the eyelids, you either like them or you don't. I love those crazy colors on my sports cars though.

You know about the weaknesses in the cooling system and have done the upgrade to the water pump, thermostat housing and fan pulley right? If not read the sticky on common problems with the e36 and do those upgrades before you lose your entire cooling system like I did because I didn't read the sticky!

Good call thankyou sir, but hey I thought I read somewhere that they upgraded after a certain year to the metal impellers?

I was also thinking about painting my wheels, I am running the OZ mito's. I wanna paint them gloss black in the center, and the outer lip in Dakar to match the car. I bought some of the paint just to have around anyways.

Not sure about that. I think it was more of a catch as catch can type deal. You may have one and then again you may not. My first M3 was a 99 and for the first few months I was not a member of this site and hadn't read the sticky about the typical problems. Turns out I had water pump with a plastic impeller and it disintegrated on a 90+ degree day as I was driving from CT to Maryland to watch the Sox play the Orioles. Needless to say I didn't make the game and on top of that it cost me $2,800 to have the local BMW dealer in Westchester replace my entire cooling system after the top hose cracked the plastic neck of the radiator when it blew. The expansion tank also cracked during the failure which is typical.

I'm now on my second E36 and know better. This time around I'm the second owner of a 98. First thing I did was pull the water pump even though it was behaving just fine. I thought I was diffusing a time bomb. Turns out this one had a metal impeller but how was I to know. Did the original owner upgrade or was it factory original? Who knows. In any event I installed a new pump with metal impeller myself and while I was at it I replaced the plastic thermostat housing and upgraded to aluminum and replaced the plastic fan pulley and upgraded to aluminum. Those plastic parts of the cooling system are known to disintegrate and the aluminum upgrades were very inexpensive.

I wouldn't take a chance. I know from experience how expensive it is if you guess wrong and don't address the water pump time bomb. Replacing the parts I mention is just part of the cost of doing business if you buy a used M3. I didn't know that at the time I bought my first one but I knew it when I bought the second one and still did it anyway so what does that tell you about what I think of the e36 M3?
