I am waiting for my new ride to arrive. My neighbor is selling his X5 and asked me if I wanted his winter wheels. They are from a '02 X5 4.4 with 48mm offset factory original BMW wheels( style 74 I believe). The 2007 X5's are 46mm offset. Will they fit? would there be any issues? Would I need spacers? I Ordered 4.8i with sport package, dynamic package and 20" wheels.

Do Not Do It!
The size and weight of your pending '07 X5 is different in many aspects of the '02 X5.
Buy it and you will be sorry.

Are you saying these wheels will not fit? or will hamper the peformance? I am buying the winter wheels not the whole '02 X5.

I am in the same situation as you, I have a 4.8i with the 20" sport package on order. Even though the offsets are close, I would be worried that the older Style 74 wheel would not clear the larger brakes of the new X5 (E70). For what its worth, I spoke to someone at Tirerack about winter wheel options for the car, and they indicated the options are very limited because of brake clearance. This is not the case for the older X5 (E53).

Performance, driveability, and stability would be affected based on the current setup which the '02 X5 does not support. You know th old saying, "Upward compatibility, NO." Silly denaliman, I know you are not buying the whole SAV for just the wheels...

The rims I am considering are BMW Factory 18" X 8.5" 48mm offset Style 74 with 255/55/18. This is the same size rim and tire size that is standard on the 2007 4.8i. The brake disc size is 345mm rear and 348mm front on the new E70. The older X5(e53) disc size is 324mm rear and 332mm front. This difference is big. However, they both have the same standard rim and tire size. (The sport package on the E70 adds 19" x 9"wheels with 255/50/19 tires). So if the standard wheel sizes are the same should they not be interchangable? The only difference I can see is the +2mm offset difference. I do not see any reference anywhere where if the truck is equipped with the 20" rim option or sport package they will have a different brake disc diameter than what is standard.

I believe the E53 4.8is came with larger rotors (355mm?). One way to get some comfort that the Style 74 wheel will clear the E70 4.8i is to find out if any 4.8is owners have used this wheel. If these wheels clear the E53 4.8is rotors, I would think the E70 4.8i should be no problem. I agree there is no information to indicate the E70 4.8i with sport package has larger rotors than the non-sport.

I found the attached brochure for the E53 4.8is. It looks like the Style 74 wheel was in fact an accessory for this model, and therefore these wheels must clear the larger 4.8is brake rotor. Based on this, you should be fine with the E70 4.8i.

I had the dealer try a set of BMW style 74 wheels on the e70. They did not fit. The hub bore size is different. The e53 X5's have a bore size of 72.56 and the new e70 is 74.1mm. So now where do I find a wheel that will fit that is not a BMW factory wheel? The truck is so new none of the replica dealers I spoke with had anything in that fitment.

I don't know if this interests you but I also have the sport package and wanted to maintain the Y-spoke wheel look for winter. I ordered 4-front y-spoke rims and had Pirelli scorpion ice and snows shipped to the dealer from the Tirerack. They fit and work great. It cost $2,100 for the four rims, $1,100 for the tires, plus mount and balance. The photo is with my winter wheels and tires. (All US $)

Swb3...
...can you tell me which dealership you bought your style 214 rims from? That price is amazing, as I was quoted $4000 CDN for the same rims by my stealer.
Even converted, your rims amount to $2500 CDN, which is amazing. |

Will the type 214 wheels fit a 2007 3.0si??? I love the looks of that wheel, and would likely use the factory rims as winter wheels (non-sport model, w/18" wheels).

You might have to put on the wider wheel flares to protect the body from road debris.

Here are three pictures that might help you make the decision. These are BMW promo pictures of a 4.8 with the sport package and Y-spoke wheel (214).
The front looks like it would be ok with the standard flares. The back may be iffy, but I guess you could always install the wider flares later. For winter I installed the front all around and they are inset more in the rear than with the standard rear rim as these pictures show. Hope it helps.

So the 214 from the 4.8 will fit a 3.0 with sport package? I just ordered one with sport package and the dealer said the factor doesn't allow me ordering the 20' 214 wheels. Any idea where I can buy them from (give that they'll fit)?

I don't know if it will fit the 3.0, however I seriously doubt it would not fit. I ordered four front rims to use with winter tires. The parts fellow at first tried to discourage me, but as we talked it through he was in agreement the fronts could be installed on the back. As it turned out they fit fine and the vehicle handles great.
Philosophically speaking....Look at all the wierd and outlandishly sized rim combinations people are installing on cars and trucks of all makes. Why on earth would these rims not fit and perform fine on the BMW X5 with a 3.0? My guess is to sell more 4.8's and increase the margin for BMW. It's your money but I think its a safe bet to order the rims.
