2007 X5 Navigation System
I am thinking of buying a 2007 X5 for my wife, can you input a destination on the new X5 when the car is in motion?
If you can, is it possible to enter the new destination via voice and I drive? Thanks for any help. |

The voice only brings up the list of destinations already programmed into the system. |

I thought the newer Lexus Navigation has the ability to input a destination while the car is in motion.
The older Lexus system did not have this feature. I have spoken to a Lexus salespreson and they claim it is now possible with the newer Navigation system them have, also the Lexus can be activated three ways. touch screen. manual controls (buttons) and voice activated. BMW offers IDrive and voice... no touch screen. Would be nice to hear from a 2007 X5 owner that has Navigation to see what the real deal is. |

So with iDrive, you can program a dest. while moving...
with voice, you cannot program a dest. at all, but can only call up previously stored destinations?

My understanding is that you can input a destination via IDrive or Voice Recognition when the X5 is stopped.
I have been told by a BMW salesperson that you can also input a destination via IDrive or Voice Recognition while the vehicle is in motion. My point is I have only been told this and have not actually had a demo to prove it! I am asking the question in this forum because there is no substitute for getting answers from people that actual drive the vehicles to see if things are indeed as presented by Sales staff! Again any owner of a 2007 X5 with navigation should be able to confirm the facts. |

I tried yesterday and it worked! I entered an address as a new destination and restarted guidance without a problem while car is in motion. Since I am not too familiar with voice command yet, I did not try with voice command, but I am sure this also works.

the whole premise behind iDrive is so that you can use it while the car is moving. well, that and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I picked up my new E70 Tuesday night...this morning, I entered a new destination by voice command while driving to work. It works great!

No...you speak the words...first the state name...then city...then street name....then you speak the actual street number one character at a time. It repeats back what it thinks it heard after each word and asks you to confirm. I was surprised how well it worked.

It appears you cant enter a POI name directly....at least I cant figure out how to.
This would be a huge oversight, I dont understand why this would be omited. Overall I am not impressed with the Nav, I had Garmin units 5 years ago that worked better. |

Its true you can't enter POIs directly and its a big mistake on BMW's part. You'll have to enter the city/state and search the information around that area as a work around. I have a Garmin Streetpilot which I believe is a superior nav unit, however there's other things to consider when getting the OEM NAV w/ iDrive. The RTTI alone is worth every penny IMO, it makes NAV an every TRIP thing, not just places you have no clue where you're going. I use it everyday commuting to/from work to get a sense of which roads to take. The time I save is priceless, although you need to live in one of the metropolitan cities for it to work. Its also getting upgrated soon to give even better up-to-the-minute info with more traffic sensors being added. Also, with iDrive you get to do a lot more things that you used to have to go to the dealership for, like setting DRLs, PDC, locking/unlocking car, etc.
I agree that the BMW NAV itself could be better, but when combined with iDrive (please understand that they are in fact 2 distinct options), its worth getting. |

The nav system with iDrive can be a hassle to work but I must say it was fun using the information option about the location where your are at the moment, to locate the nearest coffee shop while driving down the freeway. What was really fun is that the system even gives you an option to call the shop / POI and with bluetooth and phone in sync.. everything worked flawlessly. I have a TomTom 910 with bluetooth and Ipod built in which worked better but hey this is all integrated with iDrive. I still think its worth getting. No regrets here.
