RE: 2001-540iA - CPT7000

I have just purchased a previously owned 2001 - 540iA, really like the car low miles 13,000 ... sports package, audiophille, rear air bags and a few other things... Black on black.

I have one problem thou the phone in the car is a CPT7000 (CDMA), my phone carrier is TDMA based so this phone will not work and I really do not want to change carriers.

I assume I can buy a CPT7000 - TDMA and it will work.

I have a few questions perhaps someone on this board can help me with.

I have read there is a CPT8000 -TDMA available.. would this phone work in my car?

Would a regualr Motorola phone work in my car or is there "special stuff" in the BMW phone that allows the interface to steering wheel and dash board?

Finally does BMW or aftermarket offer a phone beyond the CPT8000-TDMA which I could consider.

Need to get it working ... I am the kind of guy that needs all the buttons working!

Thanks for any help.

Yes, but you'd need to change the harness and other components as well. If you're happy with the CPT7000-style phone, it'll be a lot less expensive to stick with your existing wiring and just change the phone.

The two kits are:

A generic Motorola phone will charge via the car cable, but that's about it. The CPT phones have special firmware to integrate with the car controls.

You could always install a phone and handsfree kit that isn't integrated with the existing car systems. But you don't get steering wheel controls, etc.

Thanks for the help.

I think what I will do is purchase a CPT-7000 (TDMA version) and leave the car the way it is.

This way I will be able to use the interfaces as they are designed.

After I get the phone working the last issue for me will be to see if the car is equipped with the voice activation module.

I have read on the BMWUSA web site that a module is available for $ 320.00 and it works with either the CPT7000 or CPT8000.

Thanks again... I know what I have to do now.

It seems the CPT 7000 is discontinued...

Does anyone know where I can purchase one new or used.

Perhaps a BMW dealership has one somewhere or maybe a Re-conditioned cell phone company.

Man !!! things are never easy!
