How do you get 4.8 wheels on a 3.0 2007 x5?
I tried upgrading the wheels to 4.8 wheels when I ordered my X5 but the dealer said the factory won't do that. Anybody know how to switch them out and pay for an upgrade when the car arrives?

You can buy them from any dealer. I suspect the reason you can't order them with the 3.0 is the brakes are smaller on the 3.0. Bigger wheels require more braking power due to the larger mass. Also, the 4.8 come standard with the larger brakes.

Imho...
...I think it is a way for BMW to steer you towards buying the 4.8i. Probably a bigger margin on that vehicle and many people (myself included) are interested in putting 20" rims on the 3.0si.
FWIW, I am starting to really like these 20" rims, located on the BMW Canada X5 accesories site. I have already ordered the fender flares from the 4.8i and my dealer is swapping them out for me, along with the 4.8i's front grill. |

Looks like you will have to admire mine or pay thru the nose for yours from the dealer.
Maybe you can get lucky on eBay. I love these 20" rims!! |

I looked at the 3.0 and the 4.8 side by side yesterday and did not notice any difference in the flares. They had reg and sport of both, with no noticable diff. in flares. The noticable things to me are the grill, wheels, exhaust tips, and the window trim is chrome on the 4.8 and a dull black on the 3.0(non-sport versions).

I will have to measure this. I know you get your speed bumped up to from 130 to 150 MPH if you get the 20" rims.. did not know about the wider fenders.
All I know is that I love those wide tires! And today... I get to drive in the snow a little and hope they get me there. |

I noticed that the rear fenders do flare outward on my vehicle. I will have to check the standard vehicles to see if the are flat.

Flares
The Flares on the 4.8 and 3.0 are the same even if you order the sport pkg, however, if you order the 4.8 with sport & 20" wheels then the flares come wider.

4.8i sport flares
they are different i ordered them 3 weeks ago still on back order, trying to buy 4.8i tips for my loaded 3.0si sport, waiting on 22" wheels to come in. The flares are expensive for what they are.

Hi drjeff,
I'm not sure why you can't have the 20"ers on the 3.0, here in the UK, the 20"ers are available as a factory cost option. That includes the extended flared arches. The brakes are more than up to the job of handling the larger wheels. Don |

Not sure I would be rushing for 20" wheels on an X5. The runflat tires in that size are $450 from tirerack, plus tax, shipping and installation.
The cheaper non run flat tire are still in the $300-$400 range. It wil be a few years before prices come down since the tire is new. In either case, definately get tire insurance as the tires cost more than tires for a 911. |

I have to have them.... They look so sweet on the new X5!!
I purchased the tire protection. With as many nails I have picked up in my old X5 with low profile tires..... I will be using the service!
