335i Starter Motor Cranks Extra Long before Engine Starts
Suddently after 1400 miles (soft break-in) the car is taking extra cranks before it fires up and starts. This happens now when the engine is cold and even when warm (not hot - warm). Once it's warm, it fires up instantly. But when I first got the car, start ups cold were instant.
I called the dealer, he thinks it's a faulty fuel pump. He believes the gas in the fuel line is siphoning backwards. Said to bring it in but that I will have to leave it with him for at least two full days. Reason: New car and engine and he will have to get some special authorization from BMW to do the work. Anybody else experience the similar challenge or have a theory? For the record, this does not bother me nor disillusion me one bit. It is what it is. I trust my dealer and BMW to stand behind the car.

Just dropped off my E90 at the dealer. Today it got progressively worse. I think the BMW mechanic I spoke to over the phone nailed it in that he thinks it's a faulty fuel pump allowing fuel to siphon back down the line. Thus, the longer the car sits, the more fuel that sucks back down the fuel line, the longer the engine has to crank until it gets fuel to the chamber.
Does a limited amount of cranking without fuel damage my engine....I hope not. The other think I noticed today is a long lag of about one full second on some full throttle accellerations from a dead stop where the engine revs drop sharply between 1st and 2nd gear (manually shifted with the paddles). Hopefully that has something to do with the fuel pump too.

I have the same problem - faulty fuel pump. Mine has been on order for 5 days and still no sign of a fuel pump! See my full write up here:

BMWNA told my dealer that the replacement fuel pump will not be released from Germany until next week. The reason is the part is on back order since this seems to be a widespread issue. It will likely be a full two weeks before I get my car back from the time I dropped it off last Friday.

. I suppose its in your best interests to not let it bother you as there is nothing you can do about it and you have already parted with your hard earned money. No biggy if your ultimate driving machine is already in the shop for what you now say may be a wide spread issue.
