Hot metal smell from rear wheel area?
Hi,
I have a 97 328i (sport, 5 spd) I have noticed a "hot metal smell" from the rear wheel area a few times. I checked and did not have the parking brake on. The smell seems stronger on the driver side...but then that is where I normally get out. My only thought is that there might be a slight parkng brake drag???? Any ideas, experience or help? thanks |

could be your calipers draging some, something with the halfshaft, diff. list can go one. first jack the car up and see if you can spin the wheel easily

Not if you roll the fenders. I know a couple of guys that have 19's on their car. Not my choice though i will stick with 17's.

It could be a caliper rubbing, my rear wheel bearing went out and my caliper was rubbing against the rotor. which was very noticeable, but i did smell metal. but the smell was more from the bearing that went out, bc when we jacked the car up all kinds of metal shavings fell out, and the wheel fell in about 3-5 inches. so i would look at that like bimrpwr said.
