How do you Program Remote on key

I have a 1997 528i and I need to program the remote on a new key that I bought from the dealer. (they want to charge me $25.00) Does anyone know the procedure you need to take to program the remote on this vehicle?

Thanks!

Any more key info?

Would you happen to know how to program the key so that it automatically detects which memory setting to use? Manual says they can program each key so that when you unlock, it will select memory 1, 2 or 3 for seat, steering and mirrors...

Ok... so my first post is about the dreaded key programing, or re-initializing. And yes, I did search first.

I recently purchased my first BMW, a '99 528i. To be nice, the guy I bought it from replaced the key battery for me and managed to loose the key programming.

I have found and read the directions (close door, ign on & off, hold lock button, press unlock three times, release lock button). So I am not sure if this is a really stupid question or not. Which is the referenced unlock button?

I would try the one that doesn't say "lock" or have a picture of an open trunk.

That was my first thought... didn't work.

After ign on & off... do I need to leave the key in the ign? I have been removing it.

Get in the car, Close all doors, hold button down, turn key to POS 2 and then off and take out, now click the roundel 3 times and release. Car should beep and lock to confirm. then do the 2nd key without sticking it in the ignition.

I'm not sure about your MY but mine (diamond key) charges thru the ignition, I changed the battery once when I first got the car and it wouldn't program...I had to put the original back in and drive around for a couple hours to charge it.

Seeking advice... or ideas...

'99 E39 528i

I have followed all the key re-initializing variations to no avail. I have gone to a shop and they could not get the key to initialize either. All this after a key battery install.

I will take the battery out and start again... is there anything I am missing here?

Unhappy Remote Programming

I am having a similar problem progamming a remote I bought on ebay.
The key I purchased has the same numbers (LX8 F2V) as the remote I received when I bought the car (99 528I) and looks exactly the same. The new key has been cut so I only intended to use the remote portion.
I used the programming instructions I found on this site as is mentioned in the previous posts but am having no luck. I also changed the battery after my first attempt at programming the new key but still am not able to get anything to happen with this key.
My original remote still works fine.

re: program

an important thing when programming the key.

you have to take your finger off the open button at exactly the time you take your finger off after the 3 press sequence so it goes like this

hold open button
lock button 3 times(after third time lift both fingers off at EXACTLY same time)

this took me a while to figure out

Perhaps it would help if the correct instructions where posted in this thread. You don't hold any buttons down when the key is in the ignition.

The instructions are slightly different depending on if you have the old style rubber key...or the new style "diamond" shaped key. PLUS...you MUST program all of your remote keys at the same time...but ONLY the 1st key get stuck into the IGNITION. The 2nd key (or any others...start on STEP #3 or STEP #4....depending on which type key you have.

The instructions MUST be followed EXACTLY as they are written below...if not...expect FAILURE.

(old style key)

(new style key)

I tried programming a new key that was cut by the dealer (not ordered by me, long story) but the buttons wouldnt work. I tried the steps above. When I took it back they said that the car had too many keys programmed and they needed to run both keys (original and the new key) through a machine to reprogram both keys. Has anyone heard of this before or does it look like the dealer is trying to screw me?

Thanks!

They are screwing you. Like I posted in your other thread...the keyless entry feature has no limit. The limit on keys is based on the EWS system (drive-away-protection)...which prevents your car from being started without having a key that has the coded transponder inside it.

You stated that the key starts your car...which means that something is not being done correctly in reinitializing the key...or another problem may be occuring in the DWA system (keyless entry/anti-theft system...but it is NOT a problem with EWS which is a totally different system than DWA.

Don't let them talk you into spending money on anything that has to do with EWS...that is NOT your problem.

Does the second key have a battery in it...if its the key I'm thinking about that only has one button in the center (a color BMW roundel)...that is certainly a master key...BUT...it is NOT a remote key.

It sounds like your 2nd key is the illuminated master key. If it has a battery inside...the LED should illuminate right at the base of the key blade.

Does it look like the key on the far left in the pic below? If yes, then that is the illuminated master key...it has no remote features...you must manually stick the key into the door lock and trunk lock cylinders to unlock them the "old fashioned" way.

Thanks a lot for the advice QSilver7. I tried this out today but it didnt seem to work. I dont know if my timing on pressing the buttons is off. The one concern I have is that in the guide you posted it says up to "3 more transmitters can be programmed". So I guess you can have up to 10 keys work but on up to 3 remotes work?

Just to make sure we are on the same page:

1. Your master key w/remote keyless entry buttons has TWO features:
  • DWA - keyless entry/anti-theft which locks/unlocks the car by pressing buttons integrated into key...and it activates/deactivates the alarm siren. BUT...there is NO LIMIT to how many times (up to) FOUR keys can be programmed into the DWA system. (this feature requires the use of the battery inside the key)
  • EWS - drive-away-protection (immobilizes the car by shutting down spark/fuel/ignition until the ISN (individual serial number) of the ECU, EWS control module, Ring Antenna around the ignition switch, and key all communicate with each other). (this feature is self-powering & works by sending a low frequency 125 KHz AM signal to the EWS Control Module which then converts it to a digital signal)

2. You car's DWA system can be programmed (by anyone) to accept the RF (radio signal) from FOUR master keys w/remote buttons to lock/unlock the car (this is the 1st key you program using the instructions below...PLUS 3 additional keys which is mentioned in the instructions below)
For example, since you have the new style key that recharges when it is in the ignition switch...if/when the battery dies in your key...you could possibly buy a used old style key off ebay and program it to lock/unlock your car doors then stick the original key (with the dead battery inside it) in the ignition to start the car. You could keep doing this over and over again buying a used key and program it to lock/unlock your car. These "used" keys will never start your car...but you can follow the simple instructions below to program it to lock/unlock the doors & trunk.
3. The EWS control module will only except the ISN (individual serial number) from the transponder embedded inside of 10 keys (this is ANY combination of BMW keys including the NON-REMOTE keys as well)...after that, you must purchase a new EWS Control Module and start all over with a new set of (up to 10) keys. The programming of the key and EWS control module can ONLY be done by BMW using its DIS proprietary software (and some people have some bootleg software that can also do it).

To program or reinitialize your key...you MUST follow the instructions EXACTLY. There is no wiggle room. For instance, in your case:
1. you MUST initiate the central locking system FIRST (see step #1 by locking/unlocking the door MANUALLY by inserting the key into the driver's door lock cylinder).
2. you MUST close the door
3. Then you MUST insert & turn the key to ignition switch POSITION 1 (not position 2)
4. You MUST then remove the key from the ignition and press & hold button #2 within 5 seconds of removal.
5. you then have up to 10 seconds to press the Roundel button THREE times (while still holding down button #2).
6. then release button #2

If you have any additional remote keys...you start their programming on STEP #4...DO NOT INSERT any additional remote key into the ignition switch...if you do...the 1st key will lose it's programming.
