Exclamation Blown Engine!!! NEED HELP

Hellow Bimmerfest fellows.
My 2001 X5 3.0 just blew the engine, must I say that all services were preformed by BMW Dealer.
It has 77,500 miles and when I took it to the dealership, they said that they don't "FIX" engines but replace them. The quote if you ask, is 70% of the car's actual value.

I am aware that the engine is M54
My question to you all if you know...

Does any 3.0 M54 engine will fit as a replacement??
Where would be a good place to start looking?
I am located in San Francisco and if any of you is local,
a piece of advice is extremely helpfull

Thank you in advance for your time and responses

Get in touch with BMW NA. You may find your dealership to be less than accomodating.

1) You can put other M54s in.
2) What happened? There's a lot of ground that can be covered in "blew its engine." I've heard of dealers telling people they need new engines when they have a bad head gasket.

That's a very good point. Find out exactly whats wrong before you go out and buy an engine.

I agree with all of the above as well. If however you do need a replacement engine you could get a low mileage used one from BMRparts in Rancho Cordova. I picked up an engine for my m3 from them and it has been great.
