AFTERMARKET In-dash CD Installation

I have the stock 98 528i:
- In-dash Cassette-Radio combination + CD changer in the trunk.

I want to install an AFTERMARKET CD-MP3 player in the dash.
I am looking at this:
http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/pr...I=348/_cid=302

Has anyone done this AFTERMARKET indash CD installation?
It looks like the flap cannot be closed down, so it will stay up all the time?

TIA

What are you trying to achieve by doing this? If it's just in-dash mp3 functionality, there are lots of other options....as well as upgrades to the factory speakers and amp.

Yes it is very easy to do, Be sure you buy the corect wiring harness and antena plug adaptor. And yes the cover will stay up, and wont be of any use.

Please explain what I would lose:"lose your on board computer and speed adusted volume too"

Does this means I lose my temp display etc.

No, the temp display shouldn't be affected as its part of the dash cluster. On board computer would be things like your eta and mpg readouts because you'd have no way to set or reset them.

Speed controlled volume would be the biggest loss. I love that my radio knows to turn itself up and down when I get on and off the freeway. Steering wheel controls would be the next on the list, but that can be dealt with via wireless remote wiring adapters you can buy. In the end, it's just more fuss than its worth. You've already got an alpine head unit in the car, it just lacks the latest bells and whistles.

Thanks,

I am just curious why the MID-Cassette units have anything to do with "eta and mpg readouts".

Thanks again.

Because the whole center section of the computers controlls and display are wiped out when you remove the stock radio.

I thought the mpg readout is in the instrument cluster (same place with ambient temp)?

The controls for resetting it are in the mid display which is integral with the stock radio.

If you just want mp3 capabilities, it would make more sense to get an ICE adapter or an FM modulator. Keep the radio stock and add to it.

Was this changed in 99? I use the stalk to reset the mpg display.

no you have what's called the "low" obc, with 4 functions. 540/M5 and Later 6cyl cars got the "high" cluster which adds more functionality and is controlled on the stalk and also on teh radio display (MID). I am not certain if you lose the low cluster's functionality by removing the stock radio. Again i ask, what functionality are you trying to achieve? Almost anything can be had for the stock radio and it's not terribly expensive. In dash CD? MP3? better sound? we have you covered with options, just reply with what you want....but please dont bastardize your E39 with ugly aftermarket crap.

Aftermarket vs OEM

AFTERMARKET CD PLAYER has its own advantage:

- Less expensive than Business CD/MP3 (which is about $400-500), not to mention many of them are used and may have problems.
- Esthetic: Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, plus a few years from now the car will be 15 years old..haha..
Now look at a few pictures:

1- With the dash kit:
http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/product.php/II=348/
I do NOT like the CD player in this picture, but this dash kit gives you an idea what it will look like.

2. Head Units. I found these 2 units match the BMW display very well:

a. Nakamichi CD-300 looks sharp:
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=15580

b. Blaupunkt Bahamas MP46 looks fine as well:
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=17245
(The color can be changed to match the BMW display).

BEST part is a few years from now if one has money, one can put a DVD in there using this dash kit

meh, to each his own. That looks like ass to me. If you have an ipod, you could spend about $150 and have that interface directly in place of the CD Changer.

+100 i'll be brutally honest, all those aftermarket head units look crap and out of place even with the bezel. some of them look downright rice!! it maybe a 15 yr old car but dont bastardize it just for the sake of a mp3 cd player when DICE is a better, cheaper and easier option. Not to mention you lose OBC functionality.

This is what i'm getting to replace the cd changer in the boot as it's broken anyway:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E39-E46-3-...QQcmdZViewItem

I can live without the track names, as the bmw headunit doesn't display id3 tags anyway

This is an ICE>Link, think of it as an older version of the DICE, but you get the same results from both.

The dice stays hidden behind or in your glovebox, along with your Ipod. You can mount your ipod somewhere you can see it, or choose to hide it. I chose to hide mine in the glovebox, as the radio controls most of the functions for it. The stock stereo is decent, it just needs some massaging. Here's the list. Also, can you tell me if you have a DSP button on your radio, or simply snap a closeup of the radio controls and we'll tell you.

* Upgrade your speakers www.bavariansoundwerks.com (I only recommend upgrading the front speakers, I didn't feel the need for the rears at the time, i might in teh future. The fronts make the largest difference though.)
* Some sort of subwoofer in the trunk, maybe an Infinity Basslink? Might require some wiring, but i'm sure one of us or maybe someone you know could assist, it's fairly easy and there are instructions galore around here.
* You can also add an external SIRIUS tuner or something to the DICE, as it has an aux input. There's also a DICEHD version that integrates HD Radio into it, kind of a nice feature if you listen to teh radio a lot.
