Dealer says all this stuff needs to be replaced

Just took my 2004 530i into the dealership to get the software updated in order to get bluetooth to work. Of course, they were shocked when it worked.
Anyways they inspected the car and said the following things need to be fixed (see the pics) my main concern is the brakes. Is 5mm left on the front pads something to be concerned about? And is the price out of line? It seems out of line to me but my last car was American.

All of things they listed are DIY items. Parts for all those items will probably be around $500 to $600.

It's not critical to replace those pads with 5mm; depending on how the car is driven, the pads will last few thousand miles. I'd recommend you to research and buy a good set of pads, rotors and replace them.

Fuel Injection service - buy a can of Techron and pour in gas tank.
Buy a set of jack stand pads and install them.
Buy a good set of windshield wipers and install. It's very easy to swap them once you understand how they are attached to the windshield wiper arm.

Oil Filter housing gasket and brake jobs are more involved but definitely DIY jobs.

The oil filter housing gasket is a five minute job. Hell, for $15 you can replace the filter at the same time, since the filter kit includes a new gasket. Housing wrench can be found at an Autozone.

(Looking again, it's not clear if they mean the upper gasket under the housing cover (the really easy one) or one of the others, which can require that the filter housing be removed from the engine to put in a new gasket. See http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...01&hg=11&fg=30. If it's the top oring, the price they quote is a crime. If it's another, then they might be replacing the housing as well, which can jack up the price. Ask them.)

BMW wipers are $24 per pair. Also a five minute job.

The air filter is the easiest job of all. Four clips. Also five minutes. Filter is dirt cheap.

The prices they propose are world-class ripoffs. If you don't do these yourself you deserve a chevy...

The only one that requires careful thought is the brakejob. You can replace the rotors and pads yourself for $200-300 per axle, using ceramic pads. Lots of DIY's on the subject.

Even if you go to a indie shop, you'll get both wheels done for $500 or so. It's a very easy job, if you have any mechanical experience.

+1 on the techron. If the previous owner used regular or mid, there could be crap in the idle air control. Use good premium, and put a bottle of techron in 2 or three successive tanks of gas. It'll clean a lot of crap out.

Oil filter housing gasket is a little more involved than just an oil and filter change. Here is a link to a DIY post:

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the input. My main concerns were the cleaning the fuel injectors and how soon the brakes needed to be done. I've got a mechanic in the family so I'll have him do the brakes and tackle the rest myself.

Look on Amazon.com for "Mann-Filter C 30 139 Air Filter" - it is a drop-in for your car I think (please verifiy) - it is less than $20 - the air filter took me 5 minutes to replace on my 5-series - and I put in a K&N performance filter - it was worth the price to me.... ymmv - but there is no way I would give someone $75 to change it - even if the filter was included in that.

Jake Sweeney or BMW Store???

BMW Store is pretty good. Jake Sweeney has a bunch of incompetents in their shop.

Check out Just BMW at Ridge & Highland in the old John Nolan Ford dealership. Great guys to work with if you don't want to a pay a dealer and don't want to mess with doing it yourself.

The dealers are clueless on the 2004 5 series when It comes to which build date had the required TCU required for BT to work. My old 545 had BT, they did an update which removed it and then argued with me about fixing it. I shows them my BT card which came with my car, they pulled up the build sheet stating BT and the SIB proving my car had it and they still refused. I told the service manager that I would get BMW NA involved because they removed an option which I paid for. Needless to say they reluctantly did i and guess what, BT worked. BMW NA got a call and I sopped using the dealership.

Replace the air filter with a K&N while you're at it. Will give you a hp or 2 or 3 and it much more efficient. Plus, you'll never need to replace it, just clean it with detergent and re-grease it every 20,000-30,000 miles...

See if you can find an Indy shop that uses/sells BG fluids. I use 2 times a year the BG K44 Fuel System cleaner. It is some of the most concentrated and they warranty the entire fuel system and affected engine parts if you use their cleaner.

Can you provide your build date and the P/N of your TCU? I have a '04 build date 5/04 that I have not been successful with BT by the dealer.

I have NAV with BMW Assist and TCU has the BT passkey. Dealer states that car would need the cradle retrofit which is no longer available. I have read articles that all mine needs is a SW update. But no one can tell me what SW??

What about the BT antenna? Did your already have one?

Thanks

My build date was 08/04. According to a bulletin from bmw build dates between 3/04 and 9/04 have the correct tcu they just need a software update to get it to work.
