Ride Quality / Handling - 330xi vs. M3

Yes, I realize how ridiculous that subject looks!

I'm coming from an E39 (528 5sp with Sport Package) and am preparing to order a new 330xi for ED this spring. I stopped in to a dealer to drive a 330xi yesterday, and while I was there took a stunning red/red M3 coupe for a ride.

Suffice it to say I still have a grin on my face from the M3, but I digress.

The ride quality of the M3 seemed very similar to my E39, though firmer and clearly more capable from a handling standpoint. The ride in the 330xi didn't seem to be as stable/controlled as my E39 nor did it handle bumps in the same 'relaxed' way.

My E39's handling and ride quality are 'perfect' for me, and I'd hate to lose that moving to the e46. Am I wrong for thinking they're very different?

Is it just me??

No, you're not wrong. All those cars, 330 Xi, M3, and 528 are very different cars aimed at a different type of driver. I think if you drove the M3 more you would see it more than just firmer than your 528.

I have had two E46 BMWs since 2000 and recently traded in for a 2002 520iAT. For me, there is no going back - the E39 was the car for me all along, even the slush box. I like the heavier feel through the steering wheel and the feeling when I step on the gas that it is like a freight train moving forward. It is not a 528i or 530d, but it pulls just fine for my driving style.

I have only driven an E46 M3 once, and not exactly hard (heavy rain). Moreover, there are not really any roads here that would be good enough for a M3, and speeding tickets are expensive!

Anyway, I could not see myself going back to an E46 unless it would be a second car in the form of a 330xdT or 330dT. My next trade in (if) would be for a diesel E39 - 530dT - or a used E38.

Good luck with your decision making process and have fun!

I want my next vehicle to be AWD, else I'd stick with an E39.

Decent tires help, but one of the big problems with the xi is that it does NOT feel very stable.

Audi Allrad, then? Then you do get AWD.

Patrick: AWD Audi vs AWD BMW

My thinking is that I'd enjoy the ride/handling of any AWD BMW over an Audi. I haven't driven an Allroad, but have driven (and disliked) the 2003 A4 and a friend's 2000 A6 2.7t.

Plus there's something that's both soothing and energizing about gazing at the big roundel on the steering wheel

Is there anyone out there that would recommend an a4/a6 over a 330xi?

Is your lease expiring or something? The new 5 due soon should have AWD as an option.

5 series AWD not confirmed...

Plus my lease is up this spring, too early for the E60.

True - skip the first year.

I didn't follow that advice twice, and both cars turned out to be nightmares (one american, one european).

Some will tell you to go for the A4 over the xi but I did not and I'm quite happy with the decision. The xi has proven itself many times this winter here in NH.

I am looking into the Dinan suspension upgrade for the xi- it will lower the xi 1/4 inch lower than the ci.

Also, if you are in MA give Tim Lawrence at Wagner BMW in Springfield a call- he'll really take care of you and give you a better price than the guys in the city.

Good luck!

Question.....are you talking about the M3 at BMW Gallery? (I am just asking because its not like there is an over abundance of red M3 coupes ) I thought they sold that?

Actually at Wagner in Boylston.

Lots of fun. If I had to rate ride quality, it'd go M3, 528 Sport, 330xi.
