Idle low after startup...E39 97 528i
same symptom as posted from prior person but didn't help me too much "When I first start my car in park in idles perfectly smooth at about 700-800 rpms. When engaged in reverse it is particularly rough feeling through the steering wheel and even a little through the body (reverse with foot on brake). " and dome light gets dimm and bright like engine is about to die (than it did died). Anyway I replace plugs, no engine check light, had orig battery from the beginning... is there way to increase the idle? or to fix this problem? with out costing a $$$

Have you checked for an air leak between the MAF and throttle body or a vacuum leak somewhere after the throttle body (intake)?

I took the MAF apart so many times... I didn't see any air leak... if there were any air intake between the MAF and the body... I think idle would run higher than 200~400
- Stuff I checked this morning... I unplugged the ICV pipe going to MAF and plenty of air was sucking in...If I would block the pipe... idle would run little higher.. let go, idle would run low. |

My fuel milage in all city (orlando) driving has improved from 14.7 mpg to 17.6 mpg + by replacing front Os2's (10 percentage point improvement), cleaning Throttle Body and ICV with carb cleaner, adding Lucus fuel injector cleaner and installing 6 new NKG plugs. With a little mix of freeway driving thrown in and I'm up to 18.7 mpg.
Much better!! |

i've read that only the front two really matter as far as fuel mileage goes.
