Hey there guys (and girls!), well, this is my first time on Bimmerfest and am a total noob. I've been reading this entire thread and well, i've read just over half of it but gotta say, this is just great. There's so much info available and so much to learn from so many people who're so knowledgable, so thanks a LOT for sharing ur info for people like me so I can educate myself a little too. And Pirate Pete, all the stuff at the start of the thread, GREAT! I just bought my E36 coupe last week, and yeah its a crummy 316 but considering how much i'm paying for insurance and also that my wallet's pretty thin at the moment, I can live with it. However, I am interested in dropping in a bigger engine next year once I have a bit more money and so was wondering if anyone could suggest as to what kinda engines would be good. I personally want as much power as possible (like most people i guess) so was wondering would it be possible to drop in an M3 engine by any chance? I've been reading up a bit here n there and seems like there are split opinions bout such things on a 316. Thing is I got the car in great body condition and everything works much better than i expekted them to, so I really don't wanna change the car I suppose, but enginge swap's gotta b done so in dire need!
Once again, thank you all for posting and enlightening noobs like me, much appreciated, keep up the great work! |

I noticed that there are few 318i owners...i myself am one and find it very under powered...im not a big mod guy..but would just like to enhance the performance on it....i saw the suggestiongs on the first page..and they're pretty helpful...the problem is that wht would you guys suggest as a first step to increase power??putting in a CAI??
thanks |

A CAI will not do much for the 318i unfortunately buddy as the MAF does not recognise the increased airflow
![]() A chip may help, but there is only so far you can go

![]() I did that temporarily before putting in my CAI. Trust me, if anything you'll lose a negligible amount of power. You won't gain or lose anything noticeable, but its totally pointless and you'll be puling in hot air, and that won't do a thing for ya.

Thats coz urs is a 325!!...On a 318 and if done correctly and with abit of effort (my orig pipe is still in place as per factory, the extra one draws cold air from behind the fog light) then its proven results...but like I said all of thats on a 318 and an m44 at that...we all already know a CAI aint gunna do toffee for the likkle engine other then make it run like a pig!!

Super charger is about the only way you can go with a 318. Then you still have a 1.9 4cyl.
I prefer the M3 engine MOD I have in mine. Its not exactly a "bolt on" mod, but its close. |

1.9 if it is the "IS"
1.8 not

What do you have against the Fogged mod Pirate? I'm interested primarily with changing the sound, not performance.

I am not REALLY against it, i just think a cone filter is a better option
I can see why people do it though...is cheap
