ED Trip Report with Pics

Below are some notes from my recent ED. Many thanks to the fellow festers who provide invaluable information and who helped make this a memorable experience.

Day 1. Arrived in Munich on Friday April 27 - beautiful airport, very contemporary. Rolf was waiting for us and took us directly to the delivery center. We had an excellent lunch with Rolf and thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him while waiting for my name to be called. The delivery center was fairly busy. 24 ED deliveries that day, but many more other deliveries as well. We waited nearly two hours to see our new toy. On our way out of Munich we stopped by the neighborhood where my wife lived as a teen. She lived in Germany for 10 years (4 of which in Munich) and it was nice for me to see where she grew up. Left Munich and headed for Kitzbuhel - hit some traffic on the autobahn as it was late Friday afternoon.

Arrived in Kitzbuhel and had a wonderful dinner at our hotel. Our rate included breakfast and dinner. Walked around Kitzbuhel and enjoyed some yummy beers. Kitzbuhel is a big ski town, but very quiet during the off season - great for hiking and relaxing. Went to bed relatively early as we were jet lagged and had a 1000+ k drive ahead of us.

Day 2. This was the least enjoyable day of our trip. My parents recently moved to southern Spain and our plan was to spend as much time with them as possible, so the long drive was necessary. Left early Sat. morning and headed to Italy. Drove through some incredible scenery in Austria and northern Italy. Managed to get the car up to 130 while driving through a valley on the autostrada. The 328 is no beast, but it exceeded my expectations and I'm very happy with my choice. I love the sound of the engine and it pumps out plenty of power up to 120mph. Hit heavy traffic driving along the Italian riviera and didn't arrive in Saint Remy until 9:00. Logged nearly 1100 kilometers. Checked in to a quaint hotel and grabbed a delicious dinner in the center of town (a short walk from the hotel).

Day 3. Had breakfast in Saint Remy and walked around the town. I wasn't very impressed with Saint Remy, but did very little research before coming here as I knew we would be here for just a few hours. Any other Festers spend time here? Would like to see your thoughts on Saint Remy.

Made the short drive from Saint Remy to Arles. I visited the Roman arena in Nimes years ago and wanted to see the one in Arles. Those of you who've seen the movie "Ronin" would recognise the arena. Toured the town and walked through the arena and the Roman Amphitheater. Enjoyed an excellent lunch facing the arena. Headed back to our car and made the 400 k drive to Cardona, Spain in about 3 and a half hours. I reserved a room in an 11th century castle overlooking the town of Cardona. The first of two castles we stayed in while in Spain.

Hey, great pics, you take the same kind of shots I take the only thing difference is I find myself shooting the dinner plates of food too. Kitzbuhel is great, we have skiied there a couple of years and if there is enough snow its great. I'm picking up space grey too in a couple of weeks and am looking forward to the experience. Have fun.

Would sure like to see that red interior with the light poplar. So far all the Coral Red interiors I have seen in person or on the web have been with the aluminum trim. At present I have the dark poplar on order for my Coral Red interior but would like to see how yours looks. Thanks - and keep having fun. By the way we drove from Germany to Southern Spain ourselves the year before last and I empathize with the long drive you are undertaking.

I visited St. Remy about 15 years ago. It is fun if you are a big Van Gogh fan. After the incident with Gaugin in which he cut of his ear, he spent some time in St. Remy in the convent outside of town. They have placards of sceneries where he painted. Nostradamus I believe was also born there. A short drive away is Les Baux, a ruined castle town perched on a plateau. Arles is also where Van Gogh spend several ears there. There are lots of settings where he painted, including the park, the Alyscamp, around town. Good luck with the rest of your trip.

Sorry, meant to say asylum in St. Remy. For some reason I thought it was a convent. My memory is going down hill. Bon Voyage.

Much thanks for those interior photos. Having seen the Coral Red in person those are some of the most accurate photos of the color itself that I have seen posted on the web. (Usually it comes off as lipstick red instead of the muted red it is.) I'll bet the light poplar has something to do with tricking the film to give a more accurate color rendition of the red bordering it.

It looks like a great trip! What camera are you using? The pictures are fantastic. I was a bit bummed as I really didn't have a really good camera for my trip and want to make sure I do for the next occasion.

Day 4. Had an early breakfast and toured the 10th century church next to the castle. Checked out of the parador and headed for the last of our long drives. Drove from Cardona to Jaen (just under 900 k) in under 8 hours, met my parents at the parador in Jaen. For those of you who aren't familiar with Spain, Paradors are mostly made up of castles, monasteries, and old estates that have been converted to hotels. Rates are reasonable and you get to stay in some fairly historic buildings. PM me if you would like to get more info.

Arrived around 6:30 - just in time for a late siesta. Walked around the castle before heading to dinner. Dinners at the parador are good, but not great, however, breakfasts are included with the room rate and are excellent. Had a late dinner at the parador and were eventially coaxed out of the dining area by the manager who informed us that there was a flamenco show inside one of the main rooms.

Day 5. Toured the castle in the morning and made the short drive to Baeza. Baeza is a small town of 15,000 and is surrounded by olive groves. The town smells of olive oil (extra virgin). Had lunch in Baeza and drove to Ubeda - 9 kilometers away. Checked in to the parador and enjoyed another siesta.

After a drink in the patio we headed in to town to watch a religious procession. The procession was to start the month of Mary (which is May) and moved through every church in town. Nothing like holy week in Spain, but a neat experience nonetheless.

Baeza and Ubeda are quaint villages off the beaten path and are both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

I used a Canon PowerShot SD450. Takes great pics for a small camera (fits in my pocket). My method to photography is to take a ton of photos and hope that a few turn out okay - took well over 1000 pics on this trip.

Beautiful places and pics! It's amazing how many beautiful things I won't see on my first ED... almost makes me want to start planning the second one already.

There was a hair club for men conference at the parador. The dancer snuck in there as I snapped the picture- was hoping no one would notice her.

Didn't make it on this trip, but I have been to both. The Alhambra is one of the most spectacular places I've been to and Gibraltar is a unique place. Interesting mix of English, Spanish, North African, and a large jewish population. I would highly recommend both for folks who haven't been there.

Day 6. This was the worst day weather wise, there was severe flooding in some parts of Spain. Left Ubeda for the southern Altantic coast of Spain - drove for 4 hours in downpours and the car handled beautifully. I was skeptical of the automatic windshield wipers, but they work great - quickly adjust to the changing rain. Relaxed at my parents house for a while then headed out for tapas with my cousin and his wife.

Day 7. Drove to Jerez and toured the center of town. Jerez is known for Sherry and horses (the Lipizzan horses famous in Austria are originally from Jerez). Enjoyed lunch next to one of the bodegas and visited with some relatives in town.

Day 8. Went for a drive along the coast. Drove to Conil and walked through a market adjacent to the beach - enjoyed a cerveza and a tapa while we were there. Worked our way along the Atlantic coast toward Gibraltar and had lunch in Barbate. Barbate isn't far from Cape Trafalgar where the British navy defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets. Continued eastward and toured the Roman ruins in Bolonia. The site isn't in great shape, but unusual in that it's next to the beach. It was a Roman fishing village.

Great pics! I love the car in some of those settings and Italy is a beautiful place.

Day 9. This was a fairly quiet day. Had a nice lunch with my parents as well a cousin and her husband. My wife and I went to Jerez to meet some cousins and get an early start to the feria. Spent the evening eating tapas, drinking TIO PEPE, and dancing - had a great time. Left around 2:30, much to the chagrin of my cousins who continued the partying until 7:00. Pretty typical in Spain.

Day 10. Got up late and went for a walk on the beach - nice way to start the day. My cousin came over and prepared a feast for us. Excellent food and wine. After a siesta we headed to Jerez for the official start of the feria. The feria was kicked off with a fireworks display and followed by the lighting of the lights. More eating, TIO PEPE, and dancing.

Day 11. Our last full day in Spain. Left for Madrid around 8:30 in morning. Approx. 650 kilometers to Madrid from where I was staying. Found a do-it-yourself car wash near the drop off facility and gave her a thorough cleaning before dropping her off. The drop off process was quick and easy - took maybe 30 minutes. Took a cab from ATI to the Westin Palace in downtown Madrid. One of the nicest hotels I've stayed in - located across the street from the Prado and a short walk to the Puerta de Sol, the Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace. Definitely recommend it to anyone staying in Madrid. Had tapas at the Plaza Mayor and enjoyed an early evening walk bafore calling a day.

This is my first Bimmer and my first ED. Needless to say I'm hooked. I'm already looking forward to my next ED and many more to come. What a phenomenal experience.
