Engine difference between M50B25 and M52B25

Hi Guys,

This is my first post, so please go easy..

I have purchased a 98 323i and I have been informed that it should have the 2.5L M52B25 engine which produces 170hp. I did a search and it has the same bore and stroke as the 2.5L M50B25 engine which was found in the E34 525i and the E36 325i, but that engine produces 196hp.

How do these engines differ or are they basically the same but just breath better and have a better engine management system to get the extra power?

Hey buddy, welcome to the fest

The M50B25 produces 189 BHP at 5900 RPM whereas the M52B25 produces 168 BHP at 5500 RPM

This was indeed due to the M50 breathing more easily and not being subject to the same emmissions restrictions introduced on the M52

A common mod to the M25 engine is to add a M50 intake manifold as this unlocks a lot of power

Stupid German emission and BHP laws!!!!
