Belated ED report serialized

I'm finally getting this out but it will have to be in installments.
We took a rather leisurely route to Germany as my son works for an Airline and we were flying standby so we had to allow for not getting the flights we wanted. We left Seattle on April 28 for Atlanta where we were to meet my son and daughter in law who were to fly in from Salt Lake City via Chicago the next day. Spent the night in Atlanta and everyone made their connections and we left the next day April 29 for Munich. We lucked out and got Business Class both ways ATL-MUC and on return FRA-ATL. Arrived in München early Monday April 30. Due to flight uncertainty we were unable to use Rolf so we took the S-Bahn to the Hauptbahnhof and the U-Bahn to Theresienwiese the nearest stop to Hotel Uhland. http://www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html This is a great little hotel in a 100 year old mansion with clean rooms a great breakfast and a friendly helpful English speaking staff. Internet access and free WIFI in most rooms. Free parking at rear of the hotel. By using the bus #58 which stops at the corner and the U Bahn you have easy access to all of München. It's two stops on the bus#58 change to the U Bahn U6 at Goetheplatz and two stops to Marianplatz. Ganz einfach. Get a U-Bahn pass at the information booth at the airport.
The first day we walked from the hotel to Marianplatz via Sendlingerstrasse one of the main shopping streets. Showed the kids Assamkirche one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in München. Then shopped our way to Marianplatz dropping about 400 euros along the way. Checked out Marianplatz and The Frauenkirche and had a lunch of Nürnberger Bratwurstele mit Sauerkraut, Bretzeln und ein Helles Bier at Andechser am Dom http://www.andechser.de/ Went back to the hotel for a quick nap and then headed out for some night life. Walked through the Schwemme at the Hofbraühaus but were unable to get in to see the show upstairs as it was completely reserved, mostly by Japanese tour groups. We tried for the next night through our hotel but struck-out again. So we went on to the Weisses Brauhaus. Est. 1540 http://www.weisses-brauhaus.de/ Where Weissbier was invented, so they say. (Jspira will probably claim it for Austria) Anyway we ate and drank on the sidewalk the food was great, huge portions, order a "kleines portion" unless you are really hungry! Listened to Band Musik. Angelika our waitress (early 40's blonde) was terrific and spoke fair English. She is an avid skier and had skied Alta and Snowbird in Utah where my son used to work. If you go tell her the Utahans sent you........ more to come.

Day two in München we toured the Residenz palace of the Wittlesbachs they really knew how to live at the expense of the peasants. A very worthwhile tour with many beautiful things to see. http://www.residenz-muenchen.de/ We had a very nice lunch at Cafe Tambosi outside at the edge of the Hofgarten off of Odeonsplatz behind the Residenz. http://www.toytowngermany.com/munich/luigi_tambosi.html The cafe is also a WIFI hotspot.
After lunch we headed for Münchens only surfing spot which is a standing wave on a stream at the southern end of the Englischer Garten just East of Haus der Kunst on Prinzregentenstrasse. Some of these guys were very good. We finished off the day with Kaffe und Kuchen at the Rathaus Keller on Marianplatz and went back to the Weisses Braühaus for dinner and more Bier.

I am enjoying following your report. We stayed at Hotel Uhland and loved it as well. Love the pics of the surfers in Munich and can't wait to see what else you have to send us. Enjoy your ED Delivery, new bimmer, and the balance of your trip. Thanks for the fine report.

May 2, the big day finally arrived. U6 to Freimann and the delivery center. Had a snack and picked up some sandwiches and then met Rolf for the paperwork and the new car ! I'm very impressed with this car it's even better than I expected. I drive is no problem if you have ever used a computer. The Nav and HUD are a dynamite combo. I have been to Germany 15 times in the last 37 years, my wife is German and I'm pretty fluent also, but thanks to the Nav this was the most stress free trip we have ever made. It took us to the smallest Gasse in the smallest villages without a hitch. The HUD is worth the extra money as it gives you visual cues for every impending turn or change of direction and at Autobahn speeds you can keepp your eyes on the road instead of the Nav screen or speedo. We drove to the BMW dealer on Frankfurter ring to get some vests and across the street to the ADAC office for a map and the Vignette for Austria. Back to Marianplatz in the evening for dinner and Bier at the Nürnberger Bratwurst Gloekel am Dom. http://www.bratwurst-gloeckl.de Rick Steves likes this place at lot but we were underwhelmed. The Nürnberger Sausages their specialty were great but my wife had Cheese Spaetzle that were too salty to eat and they refused to refund or adjust the bill. The next day we packed the car and headed for Bertchtesgaden and Salzburg. We almost had too much luggage. See below. My advice travel light, we had to schlepp all this stuff up a lot of stairs before the trip was over.

Great report and no we're not taking credit for Weißbier.

We´ll settle for the Kaffeehaus, Wienerschnitzel, and Salzburger Nockerl.

Day 4 Munich- Berchtesgaden
Got a late start but finally got onto the autobahn Richtung Salzburg-Berhtesgaden. The car is great at speed made 110-120 staying under 4K RPM. The second generation run flat seem very good to me. Firm but supple ride with no harshness. Hope this lasts. Arrived at our destination Hotel Maria Gern http://www.mariagern.de/ which is located in an alpine valley above Berchtesgaden. Beautiful mountain views from our balcony and a wonderful little church next door. See photos below. The villagers came to church on Sunday dressed in Dirndles and Lederhosen. Very colorful. The rooms were clean and roomy, the breakfast and other food was very good. The owners speak some English. The only negative were the towels, they must have got them at a flea market, thin and old. Photos are from our balcony and on the road below. That evening we walked through downtown Berchtesgaden and had a good dinner at the Goldener Baer , http://www.gasthof-goldener-baer.de/historic.html http://wikitravel.org/en/Berchtesgaden

On day 5 we got an early start and went for a boat ride on the Koenigsee a lovely alpine lake near Berchtesgaden. Wonderful views and humorous commentary by the boatmen (in German). Take the boat as far as St. Bartolome. Half way the boatman stops and blows a trumpet for the great echo. then they pass the hat for tips! See photos below. After the boat ride we drove up to Obersalzburg, Hitlers old stomping ground to look for a place for lunch. Did we make a find! Alpengasthof Hochlenzer http://www.hochlenzer.de/ Scharitzkehlstraße 6
83471 BerchtesgadenAm Obersalzberg
a restaurant which had the best food we had on the whole trip and out of this world views. I couldn't wait to get at that Schnitzel. Those were half portions! It is just around the corner from where you catch the bus to the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest). They also rent rooms and vacation apartments. If we go this way again this is where we will stay. Nearby is the Rossfeld Hochstrasse toll road http://maps.google.com/maps?um=1&tab...ssfeld+strasse which has some of the best twisties around. It is very popular with the Moto riders. From this road you can see all of the Berchtesgaden valley and you drive over the ridge between Austria and Germany where you look down into the Salzkammergut.
After lunch we drove to Salzburg and did the usual tourist rounds. Cathedral, sound of music sites, Getreidegasse, Mirabell Gardens etc, I recommend parking at the Altstadt B which is under the mountain the fortress is on and very close to the old town. Your Nav can find it.

On the morning of our last day in Berchtesgaden we drove up to Obersalzburg again to take the tour to the Kehlstein Haus (Eagles Nest). http://www.kehlsteinhaus.com/english/ You have to buy tickets and wait your turn to take the bus ride up the mountain. It is a very spectacular ride. Once you reach the upper parking lot be sure to make a reservation for the ride down. then you walk through a long tunnel into the mountain where you board a copper lined elevator to the top of the mountain and the teahouse. Be sure to check out the back room of the restaurant and see the stone fireplace note the chips in the mantel from GI souvenir hunters at the end of WW2. The restaurant here wasn't too bad for a tourist trap and the prices were OK too. we were over the Euro/Dollar shock by now and just payed up without thinking about it.
That afternoon we came down the mountain and took the tour of the Salzbergwerk the local Salt Mine. http://www.salzwelt.de/salzwelt/en/default.asp It's a really fun tour. You don old time miners outfits and ride a mining train into the mountain, slide down a wooden slide deeper into the mine and finally cross an underground saline lake on a boat.
After the Salt Mine we drove up the German Alpine Strasse to Ramsau above Berchtesgaden for another great meal, Jaegerschnizel with pommes fritz and a side of Spargel. The last photo is from the restaurant window. Gasthof Zipfhausel, Schwarzeckerweg 8, 83486 Ramsau. Someone let me know if this epic is getting tedious.

Day 7, We reluctantly left Berchtesgaden/Salzburg; a week couldn't do it justice, and left for Füssen and the Koenigschloesser Neuschwanstein and Hoehenschwangau. Autobahn speeds were slower as we encountered high winds and rain. En-route we stopped at the Linderhof which in my opinion is the most exquisite of King Ludwig's Castles. It is wonderfully situated and the interior is fantastic. http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/engl...lace/index.htm Then we drove through the beautiful Ammertal to Reutte in Austria to Füssen. In Füssen we stayed at Suzanne's B&B. Which is run by an American woman who runs a tight ship. The rooms were large ,bright and airy and the breakfast was great. Suzanne is very knowledgeable and can offer good insight and advice on travel in Germany. http://www.suzannes.de/ Another great dinner at the Ritterstube followed by a rainy tour of the town. Füssen also has a nice 15th century castle and lovely old church. http://www.tourismus-fuessen.de/244.0.html

The next day #8 we made the obligatory pilgrimage to Neuschwanstein and Höhenschwangau. http://www.hohenschwangau.de/index.php?id=430 My seventh, but my son and his wife loved it. Me too actually. If you are a footsore old geezer as I was at this point in the trip, I recommend taking the bus up the hill to Marianbrücke where you make a short walk down to the castle. On your way back to the parking lot take the horsecart it's worth every penny.

After touring the Neuschwanstein in the morning we headed for the Wieskirche (Church in the meadow) which is one of the finest Baroque churches in Europe. It should not be missed. http://www.wieskirche.de/ Following the Wieskirche we headed for Oberammergau. If you go that way be sure to stop at the Echelsbacher Brücke to view the impressive gorge there. http://www.allgaeu-ausfluege.de/echelsbacher.htm Oberammergau home of the famous Passion Play is very touristy but the highly painted houses are worth a trip. If I had it to do over I would make this a day trip loop out of Füssen. Wieskirche, Oberammergau, lunch at the Benedictine Monastery in Ettal http://www.answers.com/topic/ettal-abbey, tour the LInderhof and return through Ammertal to Reutte and Füssen.

Day 9, we drove up Die Romantische Strasse towards Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Along the way we stopped in Dinkelsbühl another walled medieval city that is well worth a couple of hours of your time. Rothenburg is one of our favorite places. In the evenings when the tour buses have left it's like you arrived in a time machine. Be sure to take the tour of the town with the Night Watchman 8PM at the City Hall.http://www.nightwatchman.de/index.ph...42cb024b644132 We stayed at the Hotel Gerberhaus in the Old City.http://www.romanticroad.com/gerberha...lish/rooms.htm It was a super place to stay. Well located, the best breakfast of the trip, free internet, laundry room and free parking on the street behind the hotel. The restaurant which has separate ownership is also very good. We did all the usual sights Criminal Museum, churches and dropped some Euros at the Christmas store.

Day 11, on our third day in Rothenburg we drove to Nürnberg. In the morning we visited the Nazi Documentation Museum on the former site of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. It is a very interesting museum with many exhibits outlining the rise and fall of the Nazi Party. There are many exhibits, movies and of course the ruins of Hitlers folly. The Museum symbolically pierces the walls of the unfinished Congress Hall which was for the meetings of the party faithful. Nearby are some of the ruins of the Zeppelin Field where the mass rallies were held. Allow at least half a day. A full day to see all the movies and details of the exhibits. http://www.museen.nuernberg.de/engli...rteitag_e.html

Nürnberg is more than it's Nazi past. The old town has old churches, a castle and great Market Square dominated by the Cathedral which also has a Glockenspiel like Munich and the famous Schoner Brunnen. If you spin the golden ring on the fountain it is supposed to bring good luck. The pedestrian shopping areas are very expansive.
