How to reset brake pad indicator

Hi Guys, some help would be great.


I have e60 545. I replaced front brake rotors and pads last week, I did not replace the brake sensor as according to the computer, it had 6k last and it was ok when we looked at it in a garage.

So on Thursday, I tried to reset the brake pad indicator for the front, only to produce a negative result. In fact the indicator now shows -9000 miles and the brake light is on in the dash. I read through some threads here and people had similar issue.

So is the resolution to replace the sensor or is there another way to reset this? Am I doing something wrong during the reset? I am holding down the button until the P shows, let go, press and hold again for Reset? to show up and then let go, press and hold until it resets. It resets with -9000 miles.

Any help would be great as this is bugging the hell out of me. Thank you

you cannot reset a worn out sensor, this sensor has a resistor built in, once the brake pad wears past this point. you probably will not be able to reset it. install a new sensor, it may take up to 3 consecutive resets to reset the light.

Even if the sensor did not seem to be worn out and IDrive said that I had 6k left before replacement?

i have the same problem after replacing the pads and rotors and sensor,have tried to reset many times and still getting the same -9000 miles and warning in the idrive display.the oil service interval reset without any problems.any further idears would be welcome

I am planning to replace the sensor this week and hoping that the problem will be solved.

Is there a certain way to reset it that I am not doing? I select the brake pad option, let it go and press and hold again until RESET? appears, let go and press and hold again until mileage appears, which appears at -9000.

replaced sensor with genuine bmw sensor and now reset mileage.as was said it took 3 attempts to reset but it did it.

Latest update:

Replaced the sensor with an OEM sensor which was not purchase through BMW dealer. Still unable to reset the on board computer. Spoke with BMW, they suggested that it NEEDS to be a genuine BMW sensor and now it might even need to be reset using their GT1 system. Any thoughts?

BigPimp, did you get your issue fixed? I am having same issue with rear brakes...keep getting -15000 miles when reseting computer, and dash brake light is on. Curious if you found out how to fix. Thanks

On the 550i.. (from my visit)

Dealer list price..$35 , ECS tuning price (which BMW dealers will match) $19.

Just go to oem parts sites, find your part/price, print, take it to the dealer when asking for the part and done!

Does the stealer REALLY match outside vendor's prices?

I never go to the stealer unless I'm bleeding to death already ... but ... this is the first time I've heard that the stealer will 'match' outside prices.

PS: Here's what we use for price comparison on the E39 side of the house (should also work for the E60 as nothing is E39 specific below):

Since I didn't get a response here to this question today, I asked over in my home forum:
- E39 (1997 - 2003) > Has it been your experience that the local BMW dealer will match prices on E39 parts?

A half dozen people replied today, none of which said the stealer matches prices.

So, to the person who said that ... can you confirm that (wonderful, if true) oddity?

As far as i know its just for parts, I DIY the install, Sorry for the thread jack

Well at least the dealers i go to yes. (Monrovia / Savage) in CA. (in recent times)

For little things under $10 they dont really match 100%

But all of my purchases so far have been matched using ECS's prices. ( ill try to use pelican parts too )

I just showed the rep. the paper and asked if he could match them and oddly enough he did!

My parts so far have been for the E53 & E60

I dont like the stealer that much too, but if they can match my price i'll go there.

ex. Dealer list price for Msport/M5 steering wheel trim (e60), list price $95! ECS matched price $55. 42% savings!

I have not changed mine in the e60 but I did do my e90 rear brakes. I did buy a genuine BMW sensor. Prior to changing the sensor I could not clear or reset the brake wear. Once I replaced the new sensor and followd the reset sequence it reset just fine. it reset to 50K miles

In older models car computer did not monitor brakes - only brake sensors and they had single fuse - ones it was burned (mechanically shaved when sensor contacted rotor) you would get red warning on dashboard
Now sensors have 2 fuses - when first is burned i ti an early warning and 3600 miles countdown starts. When second is broken - dash warning shows. So in order to be able to restore the "normal" condition which allows warning reset - sensor must be installed with 2 good fuses.

Glad to see someone is still responding to this old thread, my guess is that "Big Pimp" (what???), anyway, got his problem solved; as no other messages are coming from him. However, Porando here offers a totally new version, one I have not heard before. I too am having a huge problem with this reset, with New BMW Sensors, Pads and (front) Rotors. Are these fuses easily identified? And reading all the other responses, I can say that I have considered them all, nothing so far has cleared the Brake Warning. Any further input be great! pt

by "fuzes" I mean parts of sensor. Sensor is a "plastic" "finger" which is attached to one of the pads (one on front right and one on rear left) has inside embedded two wire loops ( I call them "fuzes") and as pads get thinner this sensor gets closer and closer to the rotor and finally rotor start wearing it off... When reaches first "fuse" and shaves it through - it puts first warning......

I just got a non- dealer sensor and will change my rear brakes soon..will see how my reset will go
If sensor is same shape as BMW and has same connections, it is fully plugged in ( I would assume that it gas two fuses and they are nothing more than just shorts) , I would be surprised if it was the source of reset problem.
In case of troubles I can take apart used one, check wiring and measure/compare to the new one to make sure it is connected same way... sometimes these non-OEM connectors are source of problems

Okay I have fixed my problem

I tried the reset process above countless times and it would only reset to -15000(that's a negative 15K). What made the difference for me was on the last step when the car would display ------ just before it normally would display the -15k I cut the car off while holding the reset button down (didn't work without this part). Strange thing was it left the display on after the key was removed, but upon turning the ignition back on everything was normal again and the sensor was reset back to 31K. Hope this can help someone.

Thanks Skim Milk! turning off during reset ( ----- ) worked perfectly on my '07 E60

btw I did a front and rear rotor/pad/sensor replacement...all aftermarket/ non-OEM parts. Dealer wanted 1100 for rear only, did all four for under 500
