Shifter Light Stays Lit After Car is Off

Hello, this is my first post. I just picked up a 98 528i and it has a few "issues." One of them I'm not sure is an issue but it does not seem normal:

When I shift into park, turn the ignition off, and remove the key, the light on the shifter stays on. i.e. I'm in Park and the yellow light next to 'P' is still on. In fact, I can move the lever through all the positions and they all light up too. I can come back after a while and it's still lit. I have only had the car for 24 hours, so haven't had a chance to fully drill down when it happens and when it doesn't, but sometimes it flickers really fast too, as do the dome lights, when it is dark and I park and turn the key off.

Any ideas? I will have more posts on other matters as well.. thanks..

Paul

Normal. Read the manual. Lots of things stay on for ~15 minutes and reawaken when you use the key fob so you may think they are always on.

So I just went out to the car, to lock it up. It's been an hour maybe since I shut it off. I don't have a FOB, I just have a key. So I looked in the window, and the shifter light thing wasn't on. Then I locked the driver's door with the key, and the alarm thing made its sound, accompanied by the marker lights blinking, and that shifter light came on. And there it is, on.

That's normal? Isn't the rearview mirror red led thing supposed to blink when the alarm is activated? I don't get it.

Your first paragraph is normal, yes.

Also, the red "nose" is supposed to blink when the alarm is on.

- Certain parts of the electrical system will stay on for 15/16 minutes after the car is turned off and the key is removed. one if these is the shift indicator lights(s). they will re-awaken with the lift of a door handle, turn of the key, trunk latch etc. it is normal.

The "clown nose"/ alarm red LED on the rearview mirror is one of the items that can be programmed via the dealer to blink or not blink. check out www.bmwtips.com one of the items an there shows all the items that an owner can choose to have the dealer activate or not activate via their MODIC or like computer. Item such as DRL's alarm chirp, memory seat setting with key, etc.

actually Billp is correct - the red LED should flash. The dealer can program whether the park lamps flash or not when the alarm is set.
