Unhappy TPM Malfunction

Anybody in the forum had problems with the Tire Pressure Monitoring system - TPM? I started having problems with it 7 days after I received my brand new car. The dealership took the car in twice and there are still experimenting, trying to fix the problem with no luck. Any help is very appreciated. The technicians put more miles in my car than me.

Care to elaborate so members can actually help? What problems are you having with TPM... false flat notifictions... no flat notification... wrong tire notification... system shuts down... error messages of some kind?

I've experienced one warning at 1200 miles that was shown to be an tpm error and after a reset has remained operative for the next 2000 miles

I just got a "TPM Malfunction" message this morning. I have an 07 525 wtih about 3500 miles. Nothing noticeably wrong with my tires or pressure. The only thing I noticed is that I'm missing the little screw cap on one of the tires.

I'll let you know what service says.

My car was sitting in the garage for 2 weeks as I was on holiday. Came back and checked tire pressure which was OK, the next day i drove to wk and receve the flat tire warning. Pulled over, visibily checked all tires and PSI, no loss of any pressure. I reset it and i have not seen it since. I have been keeping an eye on tire pressure and its good. If it happens again definitely tqaking it in, my 1st experience with this up to now.

I am sorry I did not follow up. I was out on vacation. I got my car back after being in the shop for 10 days for the second time. The car in the shop for a total of 12 days, more than what I drove my brand new BMW. They put more than 400 miles testing the car to make sure that the TPM malfunction light does not come back on. At the end they informed me that it was one of the wheels that was causing the malfunction. To be entirely honest, I am not sure if they fixed it since I did not drive the car much. I just came back from vacation and will start using it again. Will follow up about a week later to let you know.

Oops. Sorry. I forgot to check back in.

Over the course of 3 days, my "TPM Malfunction" message would come on about 4-5 times a day, clear up and go back to "Active" mode, then turn into "TPM Malfunction" again.

At the suggestion of my dealer, I checked my tire pressure and found that all four tires were overinflated by at least 10 lbs.

I deflated my tires, reset the TPM, and (knocking on wood) haven't had a problem over the last week or so.

Good luck.

I had a false warning at about 1100 miles. All four tires were fine, so I reset it and have not had any problems. The owner's manual says that certain radio frequencies can cause it to trip, for whatever that's worth.

I had a same problem which went away. Later on, I found out that they forgot to remove the spacers in the rear shock after delivery. I am not sure if it was related.

TPM Malfunction: no warning on tire pressure loss

Last week, I went to the dealership to install the 4 winter tires (Toyo reinforced 225/40/18). I take the car at the end of the day and drive home (10 Kms). When I got home i noticed that the rear driver side tire looked underinflated so I checked the pressure and there was zero pressure. Tried putting air but all the air was going out. I drive the car back to the dealership the next morning and they say that the tire had to be changed because the car was driven for too long with no pressure. I told them that the TPM did not display any low pressure warning and that I had noticed the underinflated tire by mistake. They said that could happen if there is sudden major decrease in pressure. I asked to check if the TPM system was functionning properly and they said it was ok. They installed a brand new tire and naturally it was not under the warranty. Yesterday, as I was driving I hear the wobbly horrible noise of a tire that has lost all its pressure. I stop the car and it is the exact same tire that was changed last week. Once again no warning message whatsoever from the TPM.
The car is back at the dealership and I am certain that they will say that there was no problem with the TPM.
Any feedback is highly appreciated as I am not ready to install a new tire every week.

TPM Malfunction fixed

A lot on TPM malfunctions in here so I was not sure where to post this. I guess here is as good as any place.

My TPM Malfunction indicator went off a couple of times. I called the dealer and they explained it was the sudden change in temperature. We get a lot 40+ degree temp swings up here in NH.

A couple of weeks later I took the car in for another issue and had them look at the codes for TPM while the car was in. They did find a couple of codes on one of my TPM sensors on one of my wheels. They dismounted the tire and replaced the sensor under warranty.

I took my vehicle for oil service yesterday. Dealer told me he needed to reflash computer because he was getting an error message from the TPM, although there was no warning message on the dash.

I am not sure what that is all about.

I just bought new wheels with tires already mounted on my 335i (2008) because of two broken rear rims. I installed the two rear wheels/tires last night and I am getting a TPM Malfunction message this morning. This is really getting on my nerves and I don't know what to do!

Peculiar thread, yes? OP 2007....one post Dec 2009....a couple o'posts nearly a month back, now this.

Hey, take it to the dealer. He'll tell you if the TPMS sensors in your new wheels are good, or even present.

Any idea about how much the dealership will cost to look at this? And to replace a sensor? This is ridiculous after spending so much on new wheels/tires because mine broke. I didnt even hit anything that bad at all for both to crack. Im sick of dishing out money.

I know next to nothing, but did you try resetting the system? I know your suppose to when you inflate the tires.. Perhaps changing the wheels out would require the same..??

Weirdest thing: A relative of my wife has a 2006 Z3 and says that he constantly has false TPMS alarms and the dealer cannot solve it. He took my 328i out for a spin once and when I got back into it, sure enough I too had a false TPMS warning. Through the process of elimination we ascertained that the smart card for his Lexus was giving a signal to our BMW computers which set off the low pressure warning.
How this is possible I have no idea, but when he started leaving the Lexus card out of his wallet the problem went away.

That should always be the first thing to try assuming of course you've checked that the tire pressure is okay.

I can believe it as I was once locked out of a motel room because I put the door key card in the same pocket as my cell phone!

Look at the receipt for your new tires and confirm that they put in new TPM sensors.

TPMS sensors are transmitters. Year or two back, BMW changed the freq of same if memory serves.

If you have a device that interferes, mismatched sensor(s), or no sensor(s), you'll have TPMS warnings.

Curses!

Yet another post duplicated I don't know why that, once entered, can't be deleted.

Marveling that management does not respond to this. Weird. Wonderful. Strange.

Um, if the the tire wouldn't hold air there was an installation problem. Either the bead was not sealed (unlikely IMO) or they didn't install the valve stem at all, or incorrectly (!). This happened twice?!?!?!?! And you're going to pay for another tire a day after they did a faulty installation?!?!? Something is wrong with this picture.

I have to add my own entry to this thread as I've also begun to have some odd TPMS errors.

I have an '10 335XI which came with run-flats / 17's. I purchased 18" Style 189 rims and put on non-run flat Conti's earlier this year.

No issue whatsoever with the TPMS -- had to do an initial reset when I put the new wheels/tires on, but beyond that it was fine.

Then the fine cold winter season began in NJ. In the morning, leaving my semi-heated garage, all is fine. No TPMS warning.

The car sits outside in sub 40 degree weather all day and when I leave to go home, one TPMS fires an alarm (front left). Pressure is fine in all 4 tires, but this pattern repeats.

I'll reset the TPMS system, clear the error on my drive home. Garagae the car, leave in the morning with no warning. Car sits in the cold weather for 8-10 hours, and I get a warning on my way home.

Rinse and repeat.

As this began in the cold weather, and as the warning is coming from the same location each time, I have to guess that I have a faulty sensor.

The car is, obviously, under warranty so to the dealer I'll (eventually) go -- but has anyone else noticed these type of warnings in cold weather?

Thanks-

TPM problem on my new 328i

Interesting thread. I picked up a new 328i convertible last week. During the test drive I noticed the yellow TPM warning light was on. We stoped and tried to reset, but by the time we got back to the dealership it was still on (salesman said we probably didn't drive it long enough to reset and that the service dept. would check it out before delivery the next day). Picked the car up the next day and light was still on (salesman said it was checked out and there were no problems with the system, just needed to drive it more to reset). Have now reset and driven 5+ miles each time and light is still on, will have to take it in for service to get it looked at again (update to follow).
