Question Decent, reasonably-priced hotel in London?

Hey Gang,

My family and I will be travelling through London for a couple of days this Summer, and I am looking for recommendations for a place to stay.

Any and all follow-up posts will be appreciated!

Sincerely,
--Jon

Jon, try priceline in the area of London you need/want to stay in.

That is your best bet.

You are travelling in season so prices will be higher than shoulder or off season.

I'd recommend somewhere around Kensington.

I stayed in the Copthorne Tara Hotel, which was two blocks from the Kensington High Street Tube Station, back in October 2001.

The hotel was completely unremarkable, and almost in need of a renovation. It is similar to the Holiday Inn Munich North prior to its recent renovation. I typically don't care about appearances (assuming its clean) as I spend most of my time in the hotel staring at the back side of my eyelids. It had a good continental breakfast.

There are other hotels in the area as well.

The location was the best part. From the Kensington High Street station, we could get just about anywhere with a short tube ride and few train changes. Hyde park is close by as well.

There were a couple good pubs and several restaurants within walking distance.

Here is a link that might help.

Not to mention at a time where the USD is not worth much in the UK.

Ouch.

Since you already know that London is expensive, this is a nice business hotel in a great area.

Reasonably Priced and London are sort of mutually exclusive but as Johnathan says, try Priceline. You also might look outside of London near Heathrow or Gatwick or Stanstad and use the Express train into town. Another place to get some good info is http://www.tripadvisor.com. Lots of data there which you can use to narrow the search on Priceline.

Cheers

BTW: Thanks for the Board!

I must respectfully disagree with my colleague here - if you are travelling with the family, staying outside of town will limit your ability and time to do things and the express train is not inexpensive either, esp. for several people for several days.

Try to find something on Priceline TODAY. Go to biddingfortravel.com for advice on using priceline and check back with us to fill in the details. Or send me an e-mail; you know where I am.

Hi Jon,

I will be staying in London for my upcoming ED (THIS WEEKEND!!!). I did a Priceline 4 star, and got the Novotel in the marble arch area for $95! It's near the Euston station, and close to Hyde park. I've never been to London, but people are telling me its a great find. The hotel's regular rates start at $200+ a night. I looked it up on Tripadvisor, and it got great reviews.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

One suggestion and one resource…..

We just got back from our ED that ended with three days in London. We stayed here and would stay again:

http://www.cherrycourthotel.co.uk/

The rooms are small. So, if the size of the room is high on your list, don't stay there. Pro's are the price, it's clean, it's on a quiet street with a handy pub, has free internet access and best of all it's just a couple of blocks from Victoria Station, which is very handy for doing London.

For other options, check out the London page on Rick Steves' web site:

http://www.ricksteves.com/books/upda...ain.htm#london

The prices may be a little out of date.

Hope this helps.

Beans

Sheraton Park Tower, great hotel, BIG rooms, typically can find some good prices there. Awesome neighborhood too. Request a view of Belgrave square.

Missed the part about family! It can be a hassle especially in Heathrow with a group traveling together.

I must be doing too much speed reading. I withdraw that part of the advice about staying near Heathrow/Gatwick/etc..

Cheers

Jon,

I have used this site to get hotels in other european cities. Often gives good cross-section of costs and locations.

http://www.londonby.com/

My wife and I have been pleased with the results.

I agree with Iversonm who mentioned the Capthorne Tara, in Kensington, just off the High Street. I used to visit three times a year when my son and family were living in Kensington. If you do decide to stay there, ask for a room that does not face the elevated tube tracks. If you're on that side of the hotel, you won't see the trains, but you will hear them.

Check out the Zetter in Clerkenwall: Really cool place and pretty reasonable: http://www.thezetter.com/

Another good place but not so inexpensive is the Dukes in St James Place by Green Park: http://www.dukeshotel.com/default.asp. This place can be expensive but you can shop for packages...really neat bar with a bartender named Gilberto (at least 2 years ago when I was there last) who makes a major presentation when making a martini at your table. And he has a nephew who runs a great high-tempo Italian place nearby and will give you a card so you can get a table right away.

My edit..I think the restaurant is La Cappannina (Soho, Romilly St.)
