I'm sure its 90% artist's speculation-- but the front-end is probably accurate since you can see similar cues in the redesigned coupe and the Xactivity vehicle (which supposedly introduces some e90 styling cues).
I've grown so numb to the recent bad designs fom BMW that this has no effect on me and in the bizarro-world of Bangle design, I actually "like" this. Granted, "like" means that I could tolerate looking at it if I liked other aspects of the car (including the interior) A LOT and had maybe 6 beers. Even after a case of beer I still wouldn't like the e65, z4 or the e60. |

Thank god I didn't wait for the E90 to buy a 3-series. If I didn't have my E46 right now, I'd be freaking out. (yes, I know this is a photoshop job based on the Xactivity...again...thank god - maybe BMW's board of directors will see the light after the new 5 flops) |

Phil- I've felt that way ever since i saw the e65 and started to get a sense for what we were in for. I think for many of us, our current BMWs will be the last new BMWs we'll be able to tolerate owning for a long time. I guess it could be about 7-10 years before BMW is able to de-banglefy their cars. I'm getting the sense that there is a strong trend in recent auto design towards ugliness. Look at the recent Nissan Maxima as an example-- or most mid-market cars introduced in the last year. New cars are designed to look "technical", "shocking" or "rugged" but never "good". The only company that seems to be resisting this trend is VW/Audi-- although they're on the cusp too (but much, much better than BMW and the others). I think most current auto design is about putting together disjoined geometric shapes and then carving random slashes into the bodywork. Last edited by bmw325; 02-11-2003 at 03:32 PM. |

I would say this is probably the 1 series sedan, but it looks to big and I'm not certain the 1 series was going to get a 4 door (thought it's strictly 5 door hatchback?). Could be the 2 series disguised to have 4 doors, or the actual 3 series replacement (which is due in 2 years so winter testing certainly is a possibility).

The bumper seems a bit plain, but other than that it looks good. Well, it doesn't look "good" really, but the problems are in the lighting I think.

Woof!
I wonder if it'll be phlegm (sic) surfaced like the Z4? Looks like it might be another target of opportunity for us Bangle-bashers. Granted, it's still too early to tell, but Bangle might just be right when he stated that BMWs will never be the "the same sausage of different lenths". IMO the new motto should be 'POSitively the same turd of different lengths'. Sorry! I know I'm being too negative, too soon in regards to the new 3er design. I'll back off and withhold final judgement until something more official is displayed. But for someone that has been thoroughly disgusted with recent designs from this marque I don't expect any pleasant surprises. Like Pavlov's dog I've conditioned myself to expect the worst, but somehow still hope for the best. Bangle and DesignWorks have shocked me in a bad way, here's hoping they'll shock me in a good way.
