I would have answered that with "I guess you'll be hearing from my lawyer then". When they look shocked, mention the lemon law procedure to get your money back from the purchase. Onces they realize making a little money off you is better than no money, they may reconsider.

well, the fact that I work for 105 attorneys didn't seem to bother the dealer.

I recvd a call from BMWNA this afternoon and things are happening now. More later if i am able.

24,000 miles and 2 years on an E90 and one minor problem, the sunroof auto close software malfunctioned and you had to hold the button to close it. Dealer flashed it to fix it and gave us a loaner. The loaner was a new X3! Now I'm hooked on those. I agree the sedan leaves you feeling a little claustrophobic, and even w/o any sort of sport pkg I felt the X3 handled great.

I am not, however, hooked on the high price of the X3.

I'm here researching if the used models are reliable enough to take a chance on. I want the BMW driving experience but I don't drive like a maniac and I am sort of tired of the negative attention our somewhat flashy looking (18" wheels) 3 series attracts. I'm thinking the X3 is seen more as a family vehicle and is mostly ignored, which is what I want. In the sedan, people tailgate, try to race you, and generally seem hostile towards the 3 series sedan. Perhaps its the reputation of some of its young drivers. I had similar problems with two E39's we owned in the past (sport pkgs, low slung, looked hotter than mundane ones I suppose). One time someone in a pickup spit on the car as they passed! And last month some guys towing a trailer full of stuff flipped me off because I dared pass them from a dead stop going uphill (they were crawling) on a 2 lane highway! They then proceeded to haul ass and tailgate me incessantly till I decided to pop it up to 100mph to lose them. (rural highway, straight away) I'm not an aggressive driver, but these cars seem to do something to people out there in certain areas. My wife had the same problems (the e39's were her main ride, not mine) and we bought a Saab since we knew nobody would even know what they were. But sick of the horrible resale value, we broke down and got another BMW.

Anyone else think the X3 is less "envy inducing" than the sedans? They have a utilitarian look that is handsome but not too flashy, I think. The closest thing I've found in a cheaper vehicle is the Mazda CX-7, but it has a few flaws (styling, turbo lag) I'm not keen on.

Yes.

In fact, Mrs. W indicated the other day that she has been cut off in her X3 here in Orlando just as often as when she drove her gray Honda Odyssey.

So it may be the vehicle for you...

X3 is probably more anonymous than most other BMW's. If you debadged and removed the BMW emblems, I'm betting most people couldn't tell you what make of SUV it is on first glance. 3 series are pretty recognizable even without badging, they just have the BMW look. Not sure if Mercedes owners have this problem, but I've seen several people mention that their BMW was spat on or have other drivers show rude jesters and aggressiveness. I think it doesn't help that the media/TV as well as Hollywood movies feed into the notion that BMW's are being driven around by a bunch of air-headed yuppies.

There truly is a lot to like about the X3. I try to be objective as possible, and I am nitpicky when it comes to evaluating cars. But I've warmed to the X3 a bit over the past (almost) 3 years. Truth is, I wanted my dad to pick up an '04 325i instead of an '04 X3. Since then, I've accepted (and appreciated) the interior and somewhat gotten used to the rear end styling. Ours has been trouble-free in terms of reliability; two very minor warranty issues have been addressed.

I love how I can throw my bike in the back of the X3, go biking on the trails, then manuever around the busy streets and rush hour traffic of Washington DC all in the same afternoon. Then on the way home, I'll toss it hard around corners and hear the soundtrack. My friends are fairly impressed when I demonstrate the vehicle too. If there's another SUV out there that does it all as well as the X3, please let me know.

For what it's worth, I had a trade assist on the first BMW I purchased in 2003. It took me 8 months form the date of purchase to get the dealer to agree to it, and I'm pretty sure the only reason, in the end, that I was able to get them to do it was that I was calm, pleasant, and generally agreeable throughout the entire situation, despite having put half of the miles on my car in the first 4 months on trips back and forth to the dealer. Not sure "You'll be hearing from my lawyer" would have worked for me. YMMV.

If you didn't like the public reaction while in a sedan, you should never get into the new coupe... damn, people racing ... and minivans cutting you off all the time.

Tion,

Was the time interval a reflection of convincing the service manager to submit the request to BMW? Once the trade assist request was submitted, how long did BMW take to make a determination?

TIA

Someone asked about whether an X3 was low profile and more immune to harassment from other drivers. I replied yes and talked about how great and practical it was, and how it's good at many things. Then someone decided to inject a Land Rover and a couple fugly Porsche Cayennes, and then the OP got pissed that we hijacked the thread.

I think they are way overdone and certainly not low profile. <- which is what I prefer. The best example being the E39 M5. It had plenty of clues about its nature but wasn't in-your-face at all. Even riding in it at a normal pace gave no clue about its beasty nature and ability to out perform almost anything on the road at the time. Not quite a sleeper but most folks just didn't know I could easily run away from them.

Any positive feedback thus far?
If you are not satisfied, nothing stops you from taking this all the way to HQ in Germany.
You deserve to heard at level that will bring about a positive resolution.
Let us know how this plays out...

In NYC they tend to notice (and treat) the X3 better than civic, that's for sure. Nobody tried to race me since i own it.

Let us know what happens. I got zapped on Lemon Laws on my old Jeep because it was over 12k in miles, and laws differ from state to state. Currently this tranny issue is becoming more of a problem than I am prepared to put up with. It shifts like a teenage snapping the clutch out in a parking lot with a manual. And that is after the SIB!

I had the SIB done to my '06 to resolve the delayed 3-4 shift in town. It made everything else worse for a month. It now seems to have adapted and shifts pretty smooth. I still don't like how readily it downshifts on a slight grade but manual mode takes care of that.
