Reshelling an M5

untill a few weeks ago i had a pristine low milage 2000 M5, that was untill some bloke in a Yaris decided to take the front bumper off for me. The insurance company has written it off because of the angle he hit me he has bent the front chassis legs. I have had the insurance company return the car to me and am in the process of buying it back off them.
What i would like to do is reshell the car using the shell of another 5 series ideally a touring any thoughts on what issues there might be? does anyone know of any shell variations between years or models? My thoughts were that a 540 might be a better donor as i presume it shares more parts with the M5. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, it is far too good to break and the repair costs are too much!!

if they are totalling the car then why don't you just by another m5? why would you possibly wan't to piece back together a car like this? it will never be the same again.

I have bought the car back for next to nothing and got more than i paid for it. dont really want to spend alot on a car at the moment. i have rebuilt cars for years so i know what i am doing, besides i think a M5 tourer would be great, had and Audi RS6 for a while and found the space usefull. besides by the time i finish selling off bits i dont use its not going to cost a fortune.

I have made up my mind i think to do it and i think a tourer would be better as at least it would be unique (or very rare!!) and as such probably worth more than remaking the saloon. does anyone know of any differences that may stop me bolting the m5 subframes up? do the main looms vary between years/ specs??

please keep us updated Steve! I know a gentleman who's 540i touring was stolen and he has spared no expense getting it brought back to life- he has interest in learning about putting a 6 speed manual transmission in his car. Any info I could relay to him would be greatly appreciated.

because he want's to build an M5 touring, and he has good/cheap m5 mechanicals, and now a 540it, it looks like.
Sounds like a great project, keep us posted. If my M5 were wiped out, i'd want to do the same thing (assuming the mechanicals were still intact).

Front sub frames are the same although the rear is air suspension so i cant swap shocks and springs over, does anyone know how this system works? can you stiffen it up/ lower it? i can fit diff, driveshafts, anti roll bars and brakes with no problem, just not sure about the air side....

I have taken loads and will upload some later, got a week off to try and get as much done as poss, swapping looms over first, then engine and boot floor, the boots going to be the hardest as they are totally different and i have to relocate air suspension electrics.. there are lots of diffrences in the loom and a few brackets to weld on, but nothing too bad.....

Right as promised some pics, engine is out the 540 now, looms run although i know i am going to have such a headache with the rear suspension and the other computer operated bits, is there software to allow me to access all the setting for the car eg ride hight etc?? the multi media loom is also diffrent, (the 540 is a 98 and the m5 a 2000) so any ideas on how to connect these together would be greatly appreciated!!

So the pics,
