the m5 was alot easier to strip i think the milage difference and the massive weight diffence in the gear boxes made it easier, but they are apart!
Sub frame is ready to re-assemble, it is amazing how little holds these engines in with only 2 mounts at the front and one at the gearbox end.
the looms are a head ache, there are so many differences between them as far as switch connections, ecu's and air bag systems. with hindsght i should have held out for a 2000 car with the right spec but after 6 weeks looking..
i will keep posting pics i have taken over 500 so i will try and filter it to the interesting ones although if any one needs to see anything specific let me know.

the folks at www.bimmernav.com may be able to lend some help as far as the navigation/ stereo wiring goes.

if you dont know already..

www.realoem.com is a great source of diagrams that may give you some ideas as to what goes where. just trying to be helpful. Good luck!

More project M5 Tourer pics

Been a busy but slow week, engine bay has had all its brackets moved or modified to allow for the m5's bits,it's also had a new coat of paint, I have had to weld in the manual gearbox mounts as well (You can see the original auto ones behind the new ones) sub frame has been rebuilt and the engine has been fitted, waiting on all the parts i had to order before i can fire it up...
The rear floor was always going to be the worst part and not being a fan of the beat the c**p out of the tyre well route we drilled out the m5's spotwelds and rewelded the floor in. we had to make up a few plates where the shells are different but over all it went in ok. coated it all in seam sealer and stone chip ready for a top coat before we refit the tanks, rear diff and heat shields.

Spending today cleaning underneath ready for a new coat of stonechip and paint lovely job.....

From the looks of those pictures you must be pretty sharp, I assume you are using a manuel?

I dont know about sharp, crazy more likely, still its one way to spend a bit of time of work! manuals wise just a parts and wiring diagram needed so far!

Boot floor is in and the underside painted up ready to refit, waiting on parts for the front, spent another day wiring today, spliced in the air suspension and most of the boot, just locks and wipers to go then the audio cabling. would like to get the interior back in soon while i can still remember where it goes!! the wiring has been the worst part, still we will find out when i connect the battery...

Not managed to get much done this week, been trying to get the obd software i got to work and getting nowhere.. bumpers have arrived, slam panel is on and painted although i went inside for a few mins and it got nicely rained on so I will be repainting that! dash is in, carpets are in, ordered all the stereo equipment so that side should be fine, got the rear subframe bushes to change to the M5 ones then she will be back on the ground. swapped over the fuel pumps and lines,
The electrics are still an issue, in that i cant test all the work i have done yet, the splicing in of the air suspension/ rear wash wipe/ sunroof etc was not too bad i just need to get my computer to work!!!! so frustrating. i have bought some alcantara for the headlining but again untill i can test everything i can only put so much back in. Cannot decide on a colour, Part of me wants to go for something different but then if i want the car to look genuine then i really need a genuine M5 colour. I like the grey i have used in the engine bay but i dont know if i have got the balls to paint the whole car in it, it would either look great or ....
I am open to suggestions!!
I think i have managed to buy all the bits i need, i have used the oppertunity to put on a CDA induction kit and a supersprint exhaust system, but that will not arrive for a few more weeks. Its hard especially doing it on your own down a 7ft wide driveway in evenings and weekends!! plus my other half has gone away for 2 weeks leaving me in charge of our 2 year old daughter who really wants to help,(banging car with her plastic hammer) and keeps asking if daddys fixed it yet! I am leaving the suspension and brakes as M5 for now till funds allow, the worst is over now (if the electrics work ok!!) so hopefully i will be able to put up some more pics this week.

Glad its going down so well, i was starting to think i was crazy (really nuts as opposed to the nice way that aw/ir02sm and wagsonbagz suggested!!) Hopefully it will be worth it!

Question is though do i badge it as an m5 or nothing?....

Wet Dreams..

You just gave like all the e39 wagon guys an orgasm..

Badge it as an M5 since it rightfully will be and if others on the road don't believe you, give them a run for their money. Unless you want it to be a sleeper...

Wow... this looks like an amazing project, Steve...
But good Lord... I'm contemplating stripping my humble 530d to ship its parts to Canada... but seeing your pictures is actually scaring me a little... just the pic with the wires made my eyebrows go up and the little voice in my head go "dude... you'll just do it wrong..."

Hope to see this beast come alive soon..

I saw this thread a while back and noted the odd title- had to have a peek. So glad I did.

Steve- I read you are having computer problems. If you are talking about engine management computer you might look into the different versions of the software available for your motor and try another. The engine software stuff is a grey area for me but I have read about people who's car did not even run until they reflashed the computer with different software. Just a thought.

The problem i am having is getting anything to talk to the computer in relation to interior options e.g configuring general module for the sunroof/ air suspension etc. The engine side should be ok as the loom is all m5, it is enabling the touring bits that is not playing nicely..

steve,

1. you have every right to badge it as an m5. esp with the engine and tranny. but as was said, no badge will be an absolute killer.

2. as for color - i'd go with some individual paint, esp on such a unique car. i myself am really tempted (someday in the distant future) to have mine resprayed in imola. but when sanity sets in, it becomes alpine white. good luck with your choice! of course, keeping the factory color is another. less messy. but since you have the car apart, might as well go with what YOU like!

3. sorry for the dumb ?: what does 'eshelling' mean? was it supposed to be 're-shelling' or something like that?

thanks! keep it up, steve. picture overload is definitely welcomed.

yes it was supposed to be reshelling, tried to change it to something more appropriate but could not work out how! Ok you made me feel bad about the lack of pics, but as i said it doesn't look that different, been a slow few weeks, anyway i went outside and took some so apologies about the quality, I am hoping for another parts delivery soon, hopefully the exhaust and the remaining coolant bits so i can get the car started up. just trying to find someone to change the rear subframe bushes over then i can put the rear back together.
I think the colour will have to stay as is for now, i have bought a number plate for it saying est m5 (E5TMS) so the badge may be irrelevant....hope you like the pics and any advice on what i need to talk to these modules is greatly appreciated!!

Colour-wise, have you considered silverstone? It's a great (and rare) m5 colour and I would love to see it on a touring.
