Steve, don't forget ventilation when you build the fiberglass box. These amps can get really hot.

Amazing job, and to think you are doing all that with a busted disk. Good luck with your surgery.

well its in!! Finally assembled the touring sub frame with the m5 parts, we have changed the mounts, diff, shafts, all bushes, anti roll bar, brakes, bearings, air springs (updated to sport ones) accumulators and hardest of all the handbrake cables.
these had split on the clips, (although the new ones have additional plastic protecting the cable.) They had well and truly welded themselves in the hubs and had to be drilled out, requiring another strip down and some carefull drilling.
The m5 sub frame mounts were also a nightmare but they are much stronger and should help to stiffen the back up nicely.

So at last it is in and i can now fit the prop shaft and exhaust.

The test will be if the air suspension works...and it starts..

steve, you might be able to make some money by preparing some kits or some guides on how to do swap some of this m5 stuff over to the touring. i'd love to say that i'd be one of your customers, but i don't know that i can find a sweet deal on a wrecked m5 like you were subject to. (i say subject to because i know it wasn't your plan in the first place.) once again, can't wait to see it all done! good luck man. the branndon.

the rear sub frames are works of art!
the only differences between the touring and the saloon are the shock towers and the hub carriers which have the mounts for the air bags on them. they are so light as well.

Now your talking! I wish i could do this for a living! seriously though i will do a more detailed breakdown of what i have done at the end ( or when i am stuck in hospital!!) and if anyone wants to commission another m5 tourer...

Progress!! The prop shaft is on, the power steering is finished, heatshields are all in place and the exhaust is on!!, arches have been rolled, at last it is looking like a car. The exhaust was a nightmare! We ended up having to take the manifolds off to drill out the snapped studs, not a easy job.. still need to tweak the exhausts fit to line up in the rear valance properly. but with only a few minor jobs to do on the engine I am nearly ready to start her up...

Sick!!

Wow....... I'm blown away not only by your ability to do the job (in a TINY space!!) but also in such a short amount of time!!!!

I haven't seen any references to your profession so you must be a 40 something (bad back) master mechanic/welder/machinist/electrical engineer!!

I love the project and wish you the best!! Please keep us updated and don't be shy with the pics.

I was so proud of myself for putting coilovers in all by my lonesome. Not so much any more. LOL!

Scott

We also put the rear wheels on the ground and the air suspension went up.... although it did not level off right... ut i am presuming this goes back to the main computer not knowing it was there... ( I hope although i still dont know how i am going to get this done main dealer wants 2 hours labour min...and i dont even know if they will touch it.)

Cars are a hobby grew up with volkswagens.., no training, Although if someone had shown me the amount of wiring i would have to do i dont know that i would have started.. I have relied on friends to help out and advise although they all think i am mad.... the space has been the biggest issue.. ohh to be able to open even one door fully... more pics tommorrow

steve,

not to be a downer, but don't rush yourself prior to an operation. i want to see the final product as much as any of the viewers here...but don't bust yourself too hard...health before your car brother! but hey, i might be talking to superman though!

*bubble thought*i hope he finishes it!*close bubble thought*

Dont worry i am only doing a few hours at a time and getting friends to help with the heavy bits. I also went out and bought a car crawler/ mechanics seat as well - best £20 ever spent trouble is everyone who comes to help ends up sitting on it...

Tidyed up engine bay today hope to finish wiring in the next few days then i might stand a chance of getting the interior in. I know i haven't got the time/money to get everything finished now but at least i can get it on the road and deal with the remaining bits one at a time...theres no way i would be able to leave it alone anyway!

just read this whole thread for the first time, you need to submit this to the Roundel and Bimmer magazine when all is done and painted....this would be an article worthy of hanging up on my toolbox, very impressed sire
