Windshield protection for pits and chips

talked to a guy at 3M about the clear protection film used by xpel to protect the paint , i asked if it was 100%optically clear to the human eye and he said no , but he told me that stoneguard uses a different material with a 3M adhesive wich once apllied will be 100% optically clear tot eh eye , im thinking of having them make a piece to fit my windshield with about a 1/2 left bare around the edges for easy removal just in case. my thinking is that this will keep the glass from pitting and getting small chips, possible to have to wax it to keep a very smooth surface for the wipers to run on, its rarely in the rain anyways...
anyone have any thoughts on why not do do this that im not thinking of
