Finally....My pictures from ED

I promised you guys pictures from ED and we've been really busy so I haven't had a chance to do it, but finally I got a chance to put something together for you.

Ultimately, our ED was really a dual purpose trip. The main purpose was to drive the car. Which we did. In our 5 days we put on a total of 1311 miles(The car had 2 miles on it at the delivery center). The other purpose of our trip was to see our friends and family.

So here's the skinny on our trip...

First and foremost - In 5 days of driving, we spent $225 on gasoline. Compare that to our plane tickets from Newark which were $350 each.

Second - The autobahns are driver heaven. Coming from America, we really could appreciate the driving skills and the wonderful roads our European counterparts posess. No passing on the right, no tailgating, no "Polish Roadblocks" (for those of you who have never heard this term, that's when the driver in the left and right lane drive at the same speed, therby making passing impossible. I'm not the one who made up this term so don't abuse me for it.)

Thirdly - The irony. Yes, you can go as fast as you want, but at $5 per gallon and <15 MPG at 120MPH, the faster you driver the more you pay. We were there only 5 days so the fuel cost is insignificant, however, if you live there, over the course of the year, the difference between driving fast (75MPH) and driving insanely fast(125MPH) on the autobahn may cost you thousands
of dollars.

Fourthly (This really should have been first) - The car. A beautiful Topaz blue 530i with a sport package and a 5 speed - No words. Has God made a better touring car yet? This car is soooo made for the autobahn. Since part of the trip was to see friends, we brought along tons of gifts from this side of the pond, plus we bought a bunch of stuff over there, plus all our luggage and this car took it all. On the road this car is amazing. Quiet, fast, economical, luxurious, etc...

Fifthly - I will hate this car when I get it here. Well ok, I won't hate it, I'll love it, I just won't be able to utilze it for what it was designed to deliver. Another words, this car's best days are behind it.

Enough of the commentary. On to the pictures. For the pulp fiction crowd, here's something different.

This is the car at the drop off point in Munich.

Good bye baby. See you in a month.

She's streching her legs(A little too far for 600 miles but hey, you only live once).

Here's what the trip and the ED experience are all about, summarized in one picture. Notice, no white knuckles. This car handles so well.

After 5 days we put on 1313 miles

For 5 days, we drove and drove and drove. We went from Munich to Frankfurt to Dortmund to Duesseldorf to Essen to Amsterdam back to Munich.

Weekend at Bernie's

This is Bernhard. He's one of the delivery specialists at the delivery center. We must have spent 2 hours just talking about BMW's. This guy really knows his cars. He's super pleasant and really enjoys his job.

Hey Bernhard, Great job. Thanks for everything.

They're all happy over there

This lovely young lady is the receptionist. She was very nice and always had a smile on her face (unusual for Germany).

She told us to wait for 45 minutes while our car was being prepared.

Love them catalogs

So, what's one to do for 45 minutes while one's car is being prepped? Take pictures? Nah, did that already. Eat? Nah, with a gourmet meal like the one that was served to us by Air Canada, who could be hungry?

Hmm...I know. I'll catch up on my reading. Uh, does anyone speak Deutch?

How much would the fine for this be in NY

There's just something ethically wrong with this picture.

Amazingly, we left the car there the whole day and nothing happened to it. As a matter of fact, when we came back, there was another car parked behind it.

This is in Frankfurt, by the way. And this is how they park there.

A wonderful sounding trip and a beautiful car. Yes, getting to drive a new BMW on the Autobahn where they were designed for is a real treat. In the picture of your speedometer where it looks like you're doing about 105 mph the gas use gauge still looks like its over 20 mpg, not bad for that speed. You do wonder what the folks in the big Merc sedans doing 140 MPH are paying in gas? Your hard part now begins, waiting one more time.

The drop off office

I haven't seen much info on the Harms office in Munich, so I'll throw this in. The office is tiny. The day we were there there was one person inside doing all the work. There were 2 other ED's in the parking lot where we were, apparently waiting for their boats. One of the cars there was a gorgeous Topaz Blue 330cic. The registration on his plate was set to expire about 29 days from that morning. Evidently thy guy who bought it literally drove it across town and dropped it off at Harms. Too bad, what a shame. The car's owner didn't really find out what his baby is all about. Oh well.

Anyway, back to Harms. It's on a very industrial street. At the end of the street, on the left ther's a long driveway to what takes you into the back of the building. There, you'll see a massive parking lot with a ton of little industrial offices. Harms is one of them. This is what it looks like.

The agonizing, grueling wait for the car

I'm going crazy waiting for the car. What to do, what to do....I know. I'll go on vacation to make the time go faster.

Yes, these are MY feet. We actually planned a vacation after our ED.

The white sand and blue green waters of Anguilla.

Our 'other' BMW

Incidentaly, when we were on vacation, we rented a car. Not exactly a Topaz Blue 530.

So that's our story. Hope you guys enjoy it and again, I recommend European delivery to everyone. It'll be a very memorable trip.

Thanks for the pics.

We had Bernard (Hausmaninger) as our Delivery Specialist too. You are right, he is friendly and seems to like his job. Unlike you though I was so anxious to get out on the road that we went through the process in about the shortest time possible -- 30 minutes or so.

Could you post some impressions of the 5 vs your old 328?

I also love the pic of your car in front of the BMW hq building.

One thing I noticed---it seems like all of the post facelift 5's w/ sport pkg have more of a fender gap than the pre-facelift ones did. Maybe its just the wheels--the pre-facelift used those deep dish cross-spoke wheels. Anyone else noticed this?

I'd love to get an e39 before they stop making them---great choice.

Thanks guys

Wow, I didn't anticipate all your welcome comments. I'll try to answer some of your questions and comments as best I can.

RobG - Impressions of a 530 vs a 328.

First, the cars. The 328 was a 5 speed non-sport and the 530 is a 5-speed sport, so my comparison is almost apples to apples.

The 5 drives a little bigger. Even though it handles no less than the 3, it feels a little bigger. I think it's more of a sense than anything else. For example, my wife's kneee would always hit the stick in the 3 (from the passenger seat) while in the 5, because of it's console her knee doesn't come anywhere close to the shifter.
The space in the 5 is amazing compared to the 3. The sport seats are huge, the console is huge the back seat feels like it came from a furniture store, it's so big and that trunk. Wow.
One of the things I noticed in the 3 was from the back seat, you can hear the action from the wheel well. Not that I was back there more than once, but nevertheless. In the 5, no noise. A much more comfortable car.

Inside - The first thing you notice when you start the 5 is that the engine sounds like it's further away than in the 3. It's the same gorgeous inline 6 sound, just more muted. The next thing you notice is that the clutch is softer, with an apparent longer travel. The next thing you notice is that the stick doesn't snick into gear. It travels there. That's because of two things. The stick is longer and the travel is longer. So going to first is more of a right angle movement. Here's the thing, if this was the setup in a 3, it wouldn't work. The car would feel 'lazy'. In the 5, you're a little more relaxed due to the car's size and the slightly more hydraulic feel that you get works. What IS better about the 5 (and this is due entirely to the sport package) is the steering wheel. It's smaller diameter and thicker grip, coupled with the sport seats completely change the character of the car. The non-sport 3's steering wheel felt like it was looser than the 5's. It's also much thinner and not padded.

Driving - Once you get the car to speed, you question whether you're driving a car or a brick (in a good way). The car is solid. Nos shakes, rattles or rolls. Just a great chassis. What I was surprised at was the movement of the sport suspension. At high speed (0ver 100mph, especially), the car had a tendency to 'bounce'. The suspension was rebounding rather stiffly. My wife compared it to turbulence on a jet. It wasn't uncomfortable, and in no way did it compromise safety, I guess it's the car's way of telling you that you're cooking. The 3 on the other hand, without the SP, had a tendency to float at 100MPH. It had a very lazy rebound.

Taking turns in the 5 was a dream. There's someting to be said about a big car that can handle. The suspension keeps you straight, without leans. No rolls in this bad boy. The 3 didn't feel as solid. It actually felt a little more forgiving than the 5. I know this sounds a little strange but trust me on this one. Low profile tires definately don't forgive. The 5 has em the 3 didn't.

Acceleration is about the same between the two cars. The 3 is a little quicker. Remember, my last car was a 328 and not a 330.

All in all, the two cars are completely different. They are made for people that are looking for different things from their cars. With it's size, the 5 is the better comprimise. With it's smaller size and a more demanding linkage, the 3 is the more personal car. I could only imagine how much more rewarding the SP 3 series is.

If I wasn't married and didn't have kids to think about at some point, the weapon that I would choose today would be the new 330 with the performance package. You're practically buying an E36 M3 with the comfort and safety and luxury features of an E46.

But alas, I have to think like a married man so thank God that BMW makes a perfect car for guys like us. Incidently, my wife loves that car too. And she was a big proponent in getting it with a stick. It's quicker, faster, handles better, is more interactive and returns better gas mileage than its automatic counterpart.

Roots - Thank you. Already there, although with my alter ego.

beauport - nice catch regarding the gas mileage. Can you believe it? At around 100 mph, we were averaging about 20.5 mpg.

robg - as per the suspension height, I don't know how it compares to pre 2001 E39's. I know some people have said that the earlier SP's drove a little different than the new ones. I can tell you that the car appears to have a substantially lower gap than the non-SP.

postoak - Yeah, Bernhard is cool. On our way out I told him I'll see you later. I meant it. Can't wait for the next ED!

Euro delivery

What a great narrative from shabbaman!!

I'm new to this forum but this was a timely post. My wife and I leave for Munich on Feb 28 for a March 5 delivery of our 530i. Titanium Gray, sport package, winter package, and fold down rear seat. My wife drives a 2000 323i (just a "plain-jane" 3-series). The 5 will be my baby and can't wait to tour through Germany. We'll only be driving it 3 days before returning it on March 7 and then the long wait till it gets back to Wisconsin.

It's going to be great!!

very nice shabba--congrats!

you're one lucky dude--first a vacation in germany to pick up your new baby, followed up by one in anguilla (never been, but they tell me it's nice)?

i too think that i'll arrange another ed in a few years (assuming we like the new 5-series), when our boys are old enough to appreciate it, and i'm looking forward to it already!

:-)
