Unhappy Please Help

hi guys great forum...

my names lee and im from the uk. i have bought my mrs a 316 compact 1999 [T reg] i have spent alot of time repainting it [i own a bodyshop] and have modified it somewhat cosmetically... i am now sorting out all the mechanical side to it..and i have got a major problem neither the rev counter or the water temp gauge works, the water temp gauge moves wen the ignition is turned on but doesnt move from the 1st white line before the blue section i have just replaced the sender unit but it hasnt made any difference i have checked all the fuses and still no joy also the asc button doesnt seem to light anything up wen pressed on the dash nor does the cruise controll switch... i have tried everything i can think of...and am worried now as ive got a week to get it sorted as its a surprise for her birthday next week...

please help guys/girls and thanks in advance

Hey buddy, welcome to the fest

Have you pulled the cluster out to check the plug in that back is in correctly

If you push the ASC button, it should put a light on in the middle of the cluster

I know this sounds REALLY odd, but bear with me

Have you got a non-bmw stereo in the car?

Either that or the circuit board on the cluster is FUBAR

Disconnect it and see what happens

I know it sounds really silly but non-standard head units have played havoc with clusters in the past....

Hope it is not just a waste of your time

Will admit that this generally only affects the gauges but is worth a try

If not, i would put my money on the cluster being dud....

similar thing happened with my cluster...i got one off of ebay for pretty cheap. just make sure you email the seller and make sure it works if it comes down to the fact that the cluster is kaput...look to spend around 100+ with shipping. a small price to pay for that beautiful orange glow

Sorry buddy, i have no idea where to get them

The self test is programmed into the cluster and so maybe it is the part of the cluster that interprets the signals sent by the different senders

You know anyone else with the same car that you could try their cluster?

you can go to the $tealership to have it reset to your car's needs. also look in the parting out section of our forum...it is likely that someone there may have a second-hand cluster for cheap

Welcome to the fest man!! Bodyshoping the Mrs. car. you must have done your best work yet!!
Anyway, If the car has been in the body shop. Most likely interior stripped. Check the terminals and the circuitary in the cluster for oxidation or paint left on the contact points.

Try reflashing the E.C.U. could help?

Or un-plugging the battery terminals and connecting them again. DO NOT do that unless you have the original remote control!!! OR you will be in deep $hit!!

well took it into dealer today they checked it on their machine and theirs a communications fault as the dme isnt talking to the instument cluster hence why even the service lights dont go out and just stay on permantly...now they seem to think its a short circuit or a dodgy muti plug between the dme and the instument cluster. they doubt very much theirs a problem with dme because theirs to many thing not working at would be a massive coincidence if all those faults appeared at once...

so looks like ive got some major stripping out and checking to do over the weekend

That sucks mate

Is possible that it is a connection issue, but dont discount a bad DME
