540I radio problem?

Hi, if you guys read my other post you know that i'm new here and just purchaced a 2000 540i with a collection of minor issues that i would like to get resolved.

When i turn the radio on it sounds like crap and seems like only 2 small speakers are putting out sound and is not very loud but it pumps out some SERIOUS bass from the rear speakers mounted on the top of the trunk, it almost seems like 95% of the power is going to those subs, also the sound will go away after about 30 seconds of listening to the radio but comes back if i turn the radio off and back on. I was told by the person i bought it from that the first owner of the car put a system in it and took everything out when he got rid of it, it still even has the sub and amp cables in the trunk. Im thinking its possible that the car has the wrong amp and that someone just tossed a random bmw amp in there, i took a look at it and its just sitting in that compartment, not bolted in or anything but there are 2 plugs plugged into it, is this possible and is there any way to tell?

Also, how do i know if i have the dsp radio or not?

Thanks

There are two easy signs of a DSP system:

1. The headunit has a button labeled "DSP"
2. There will be a box hanging under the rear deck, perhaps 5" deep, going across the trunk

Your system is just messed up. Tossing gear at it is the wrong way to go, bring it to a shop or have a BMW-stereo-knowledgeable friend take a look at it.

It sounds like i have the dsp system then juding from the box hanging from the top of my trunk. A bit of an update as far as the sound goes, i just took a closer look at the amp and it turns out that alot of the wires were cut and just needed to be spliced together

I did that and gave the radio a try, it sounds normal now, the speakers seem to be pritty decent, but im still having the problem of thes sound going away after abut 25-30 seconds of use but still if i shut the radio off and turn it back on it will be good for another 30 sec, if i get this resolved i should be good to go.

Also, i still have 3 wires un accounted for, there is a braided strand of a yellow/black & a yellow/grey wire and there is no spot for this on the amp and there are also 2 black wires one looks like a cable wirend the other looks like a cable call jack and they DO fit into each other, do these go together?

Again, the help is apreciated.

I'm in the same boat with my new to me 528iT. Has the business radio with DSP button. Previous owner replaced the amp and sent the radio / cassette chassis to Don? in TX. Neither fixed the problem:

... mine is exactly the same problem as yours. Jim Cash is the radio master on the bmwtips link suggested. My MID ["multi info display" that is the panel you would think would bethe radio [it's not] ] is still lit and functioning when sound goes away. For the 25-30 seconds of life ... the volume on the steering wheel works [as do all steering wheel to radio functions] but the volume / rotating power button on the MID does not.

Interesting system BMW ....

That sounds like the same except are you saying you get your sound back if you use the button on the steering wheel?

This is really frustrating as i really will go crazy with no radio in my car, hopefully someone can chime in with a fix.

DSP amp replacement problem

I'm having a weird problem with my DSP amp - 99 540 with DSP, recently made swap for an OEM Business CD head unit. In a storm a few weeks later the speakers all went BZZZZAWRP (in great stereo) and no sound after. Got a new (eBay) DSP amp from a 98 528 and now the stereo turn on and plays fine, but only for 40 seconds then no sound. Also, the DSP button gives a blank display with no way out. If you cycle the ignition switch, it work for another 40 seconds. The new amp is a dirrerent HW and SW number than the old (different P/N too, but seller swore it would work). Can it be coded to work or do you have to replace with the same? Please email me at BEntrekin@Prime-Eng.com if you can help.

Help.
