745 or 535

Ok, I know I'm asking for trouble by asking this here but here's where I'm at...

2004 745i 18K miles, SP, Rear shades (excuse my ignorance on the correct option names for the 7 series), has 6 disc cd on dash, 19 inch wheels, heated seats, xenons, honestly, I don't know every thing that it has, but I will be finding out tomorrow when I run the VIN thru BMW, but it seems to have a lot of the options installed, I can get it for 40K.

or

A new 2008 535i w probably SP & PP...

so

What should I do?

Please be kind...

Thanks

i vote for 2008 535i. you get a new car, so you know 100% there was never anything funny with it (accident, suspension work, frame damage, etc.)

you also get a kick butt engine and a facelift (no more yellow eye-brows, better window switch posion, etc.)

if 2004 745 was bult in '2003, its already 4 years old.

of course 535 might depreciate more since new cars drop more in value compared to used car... personally, back space between 745i and 535i is about the same, and given new car vs. used car, i'd get a new car. plus, 535 will be zippy and save more gas vs. 745i

actually the car i am in love with now is a 335i

Thanks, big concerns I have on the 7, and this might be just again not knowing enough about the model...

1. It is not CPO and the warranty will expire I beleive Apr 08. So I guess it is added cost on top of the 40K.
2. When I test drove it, the A/C even though set to 60 did not really cool down, maybe just a setting?
3. Brakes made noise and were kind of "scratchy" when applied?
4. There was a repair on the leather on the back seat, or should I say an attempt to repair.
5. Lots of dings on the front from highway rocks.
6. Lots of scratches in the trunk, and dings again, like if the previous owner put some very heavy luggage in the trunk, and while doing this banged the surroundings of the trunk on the outside, like the rear bumper.
7. When the car was first started, the engine sounded like a diesel, was like that until I started driving it. It this normal? When we got back from the drive, then it was beautifully sounding!
8. Steering was kind of loose while on the Sports Mode. Salesperson said just needs alignment.

For a car with such low miles, looks like maybe they drove it hard?

Besides that, the car drove great.

Thanks

I'd take a pristine CPO 745 over a brand new 5 Series any day. Keyword: pristine, and they are out there, you just have to look and be patient. Mine was a CPO with 12k on it that a guy traded in on a whim for an M6. Just look around in the 45kish range you should be able to find something really nice.

I agree

As much as I like the 535i I would take a good CPO 745i over it. Now if you were talking an M5 it would be a different story.

Down here in Florida, BMW dealers are asking a ridiculuos amount of money for CPOs 7 series. Like for example, 2004 745 with 52K miles for 49K. That's ridiculous!

That's why I thought , hey this one has 18K miles, it is a 7, what can be wrong about it? Again, never had a 7, had several 3 series, couple of 530s and one Z4. I guess many things can be wrong...

$40k for an '04 w/18k miles sounds too cheap... I would certainly get the BMW history and a carfax report...

If you are not successful w/the dealer, a polite request for a service history in the "Dealer" forum w/the VIN will usually produce results in a couple of days...

The car is not on a BMW dealer. I posted the question for the options in the Ask-A-Dealer section. It is my understanding that service records are not released unless you are the registered owner?

Just have that itch to just go and get the 7 this morning. Have to remain calm...

Hey Bro,

I wouldn't just settle for anything you may regret it later, here's a link to all of the CPOs listed on BMW NA's website and here's a few that are in Florida. Maybe you could contact the BMW dealership and see if they will transfer the car to your location if you find one you like.

I have 03 745 and I am very happy. You may have new car BUT even if its 04, 7 is still 7.
Look at price sticker for new 7 and new 5 series. Price tells all. Car is bigger, more comfortable, its BMW flag ship and i think they may have a reason why is 7 flag ship, not 5. Plus when you drive 745, people will notice. Just make sure that you dont buy some crapy 7, it must looks and drive like new.

The only 12K I've found, 2004, no SP, just a few options, CPO, they want 57K.

uh... a fully loaded 550i will go for 80K while bare 745i goes for about $5K less. i for one would rather drive fully loaded 550i instead of a bare 745i.

id say go for the 7 if you want a more luxurious comfortable ride. the 7 is not a sports car even tho it can be driven like one, but you get basically no feedback from it. if you want a more fun sporty car then go with the 535i. you buy a 7 for the room and comfort and yes you also buy the 7 as a social status icon despite what people say on here. a 7 says look at me i made it big even if you dont buy it for that sole reason. if you have a family then without a doubt i would say get a 7, but if you dont then its up to you. 535i is more of a drivers car while the 7 is more of a passangers car.

Sounds like you already decided to buy the 5 series. 8 Things you don't like and you are seriously considering the 7?

I have made a decision. I got the 535i. Actually, the deal was too good to pass. So, I ended up getting the 535i.

Thanks to everyone for your help and comments! I was really looking forward to becoming a "7" man, but I guess for now I'll be 7-2

Actually when I was leaving the dealership, they had my 2008 535 parked right next to 7 series cars. When I left I just looked at them and thought to myself "someday"...

For now, I'm very happy with the 5, very fast car with the twin turbos.

Again thanks to everyone for your help and advice. Now I need to get rid of the Z4. Life is never boring!!!!
