Fluttering noise on E 93 335i convertible?

I have a 2007 335i convertible with the sports package and from 40-70 mph it makes a fluttering noise. It almost sounds like if you left a sunroof open with all the windows closed. I have opened, closed windows and tried every speed and cannot figure out what it is. It is NOT an out of round tire nor tire noise. Has anyone noticed this ? And yes, of course the dealership "cannot reproduce problem" when even my mother noticed and she knows about cars as little as anyone can. Any imput?

I've noticed something similar, but thought it might be tire noise. I was thinking of getting all 4 balanced to see if it would go away.

I've also noticed when backing out of my driveway into the street (ie, where there is some stress placed on the frame) a small clunking noise. Like the roof pins in the top of the windshield are shifting around a little when the frame is stressed. But hey, at least it is quieter driving on the road than a rag top

Is it the seatbelts in the backseat.

With all due respect, I also hear the top as there is a "twisting" (for lack of a better word) of the top as the car backs out of a driveway. The rear seatbelts do make a flapping noise when the top is down but if you just pull the pice all the way up it actually stays there and no noise. As the fluttering... already had the tires roadforce balanced and no change. I love these forums... at least I know I am not immagining these things as the dealer insinuates...

I also have the same issue but haven't been to the dealer to have it checked out yet. My local dealer seems to auto-respond with "can't duplicate problem," so hopefully they'll go for a quick ride with me so I can point it out.

I've only had the car a couple weeks and noticed the car doing the same thing yesterday. It's one of the first times I had the top up due to rain. I have an appointment at the dealer at the beginning of August to see if they're going to fix my iPod problem. I'll just add it to the list of things that they need to be looked at.

Gladd to hear I am not alone and others hear it. Merklebob, the problem is with the top and windows up and only from 40-70 mph's. I almost bought the blocker but found it cumbersome, large and expensive. We should keep each other very updated as the excuses will be amazing. I was told it was my turbos that made that noise and that it was me that was not used to the sound. The advisor tells me this as my wife drives up in out Turbo Cayyene that THEY also sold us years ago.

My vert cost 61K WTF is another $600. I just don't get people that will buy and expensive car then trip on low cost options. I have seen post where someone was asking (in a vert) should i spend the extra $350 on heated front seats? Look people do your self a favor buy a Scion. And get ready for your $300 oil change in 3 plus years.

I have the same noise - see my earlier post. Have not taken it to the dealer yet, I'm waiting for my list to get longer before the "cannot reproduce" hassle starts.

Does this happen with the top down? I almost always drive mine with the top down and so far I haven't heard a fluttering noise.. knock on wood.

Only with the top up @ 40-70mph. If you are in a very noisy part of town (downtown) you may not appreciate it, but if you are driving at 5am with little trafic and or adjacent noise then you will. Also, with all windows up. I have the sports package so no idea if that may me a contributor. Also, LA, La Eric... what are you talking about ?

Ok this is the second thread, so its happening to alot of cars I have it at about 55, only top up windows up. cracking a window down does not help. Must be in the shape of the top. They messed up. I hope there is a cure. we would all be in trouble if they lower the speed limit to 55 like in the past. Nothing of course with the top down. and the wind screen does nothing when the top is up. I wonder if BMW knowes? It cant be any different for Euro versions.
But what a car.......

I haven't been interested in driving mine with the top down since late-June, when the temperatures in Phoenix rose to above 100F and have stayed there (109F today).
Yeah I know, but it's a Dry Heat

Thanks, then I won't waste money trying a wheel balance (ie, I was going to try RoadForce).

I'm guessing it might be the hinges or the aerodynamics of the shape of the top. I am not optimistic that there can be an easy fix but you never know.

Today was the first time I drove mine with the top up for more than a few blocks. I noticed this fluttering sound as well. It is almost a rumbling but not as deep a frequency. I thought I was hearing things, but after seeing this post, now I am not a happy camper. WTF??? I hope someone responds who takes their car to the dealer and they hear it - would very much like to find out what can be done about this! I do NOT hear this sound with the top down - window position up or down. A $60K rumbling is NOT my idea of a good thing.

I haven't noticed anything like this, but I'll listen for it next time. I drive top up quite a bit though I only have a little over 500 miles on my car so things could change. So, far so good though.

We have the sports package as well, but no fluttering sound with the top up--our e93 is very quite. The only thing I can think of is to check the alignment of your top relative to the rest of the car. If you put the top down and/or up on unlevel ground it can tweak the top alignment.

I am not sure if it is the top or not. Reason being is that I specifically hear this only from 40 miles per hour to about 70 or so peaking at 57 miles per hour and it feels as if the rear end if rumbling / fluttering. It IS getting worse every day which is making me wonder if it is a tire and or balancing issue now since it was the dealer who balanced my car. I may just take it to a specialty store to get it RE balanced. What goes against me thinking it is not the tires and or rims is that so many of you hear this. For the ones who have low miles, mine was at least only noticable about 1000 miles. Otherwise this is an amazing car for the money. I just got rid of my SLK 55 AMG Mercedes which was hands down the most problematic car I have EVER owned.

testing 1 2 3. Ok lets try this again. A few mornings back in early June as I was driving in to work at about 50mph I heard a rumbling noise coming from what I thought was the driver's side rear wheel/tire. After about 1/4 it was gone. This happened twice; the first time this happened the car had been sitting in the garage for two to three days. The second time this happen the early morning temps were below the average temps for early June. It is almost as if the run flat tire had a flat spot and after it warmed up the rumbling noise was gone. The weather here has since warmed up and no problem with the rumbling noise.
