Breakin period?

I'm off to get my car in a couple weeks and wonder how closely people follow the breakin guidelines during their ED travels?

Anyone want to share?

I stuck to the break in protocol of <4k rpm and <100mph. If I could do it over again, I would have taken her to >155 mph. Short bursts to max will not kill the engine. It's more important to vary the engine speed from what I've read. Besides how often can one max the car here stateside?

Our '07 X3 manual says 4,500 RPM. So did the manual for our '04 325i.

100mph/160kph.

I tried to vary my speed and rpm's...but keeping it under 100mph on the autobahn was pretty much impossible

Followed them pretty much to the letter this time.

One way to almost guarantee that you adhere to the breakin recommendations is to simply not take the autobahn/autoroute/autostrada until the end of your trip except where absolutely necessary.

Don't know if you're getting NAV or not, but if you are then just set it to avoid highways. Not only will you pretty much have to vary your speeds and whatever else called for in the breaking, you will see so much more beautiful towns and scenery than just going from point A to B on the highway. You will find that the country roads in Europe are orders of magnitude better in quality than here in the U.S.

If you must attempt a Vmax run, just wait until the end of the trip when you will have put on the most miles.

I spoke to two Master Technicians before I left for my ED.They both said as long as you vary the speed and don't go all out for long periods, you won't hurt the car !

What's the logic behind limiting max speed to <100? Keeping the tach under 4500? OK, that I get. But how is (say) a piston ring aware of how fast the car is traveling?

On my X3 I was just under 4000rpm at 110mph and on the 530i just under 4000rpm at 120mph
cheers

Argh...I worded my question ambiguously--I "get" keeping the tach uner 4500rpm, but don't understand the speed restriction since it's easy to get a 335 up to 140 without going over in terms of RPMs (exactly what you are saying).

Smile Break in period--what break in period?

We paid zero attention to break-in period...normal driving patterns in Europe mean that you end up varying speed quite a bit. We did take it to 155 on three or four occasions...

I was alone so I figured I couldn't get my 155 mph "money shot" photo. So I got it to 125 and happy w/ that. With all the construction and speed limited areas I was in I had very few chances to even do that. Plus I didn't want to completely disregard break in rules. It's truly amazing how planted the car feels at these speeds. The high quality of the roads gives you confidence as well. I never even got close to 4500, mostly around 3500 max. On the a-bahn I would down shift into a lower gear every so often and let off the gas to slow and then accelerate back up. Just so I didn't sit at one rpm too long. So I guess I was pretty good about it.

I agree. Maybe they don't want you getting too crazy on new tires. They tend to need a few miles to scrub off the new tire sheen. Certainly a lot less than 1200 miles however.

I seem to remember part of the speed limit "suggestion" is for the tires.

Cheers

We adhered precisely to the break-in suggestions....................................... except for that one little stint up to 150!

Same here!

We drove 1300 miles on our ED so I held off on the ****ph sprint till after 1200 miles. Besides the 335i engine is so strong there isn't much need to expand above 4500 rpm anyway.

I guess I'll add my experience. I drove on small curvey roads till about 400 miles, and then took it to the limit on the Abahn . Note : with the new direct injection + 2 turbos I never had to take it out of 6 gear , so It never was redlined but was full thottled. I've had my car now for 6 weeks here in the States and no problems. See my Videos below

Engine, tires, and brakes. That is what needs to be monitored. Engine, under 4500 RMP, no WOT. You can get up to speed, it just takes a bit longer. Tires, you need to bleed off the sheen, warm them up, so keep it under a hundred for a bit, and don't heavily stress them in turns. Brakes? no full stomping, no high speed hits either. Do the brakes gently for a while to wear the pads in. Do your high speed stuff towards the end and you will be OK.

Its nice to read what you said about the brakes. Certain members realy gave me a hard time about the questions and feelings I had about bedding in pads. I realy felt bad,LOL

I'll go somewhat easy on the car, but I will be traveling at ****ph at least once. You can count on that. Driving that fast is part of the Euro experience...I can hit 120 here in the states..

I kept it below 4500 RPM. This made it possible to hit 125 mph once on 328i'07
