E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Shoulder width in 1er vs. E46?

I cant wait to sit in the 1 and see for myself but I wonder how the width compares with the E46 as far interior shoulder room goes. In the UK 1 sereis coupe spec it is 54.1" wide shoulder width.
Anyone have the spec on the E46 shoulder room width?

I had a SAAB Viggen once it was so narrow that you rubbed your arm on the passenger when shifting- I want a small car but not that narrow.

This looks to be the PERFECT car to trick out that wont break the bank!

Front or back? From the front seat, the 1er feels very similar to the E46. Slightly narrower (which could be due more to design aesthetics than actual space), perhaps.

The back seat is a different matter.

yes I did mean the front seat- the back seat is for old newspapers, fast food wrappers and golf clubs when the seat is folded down! If it si the same size and the E46 I am good to go- will get one in 2010 maybe a ZHP! I have a Z4M coupe now that I love and will be ready for an automatic and it looks like this is the ONE

I feel that I have just as much room in the E90 as the 1 series. It is very comfortable. It feels, perception wise it is only a hair smaller. I am 6ft tall, 215 lbs and wear a 48 suit coat, it that helps anything.

Have you sat in the 1 then for an extended period of time?

I had one for eight days in March and can confirm what he says.

However, it only applies to the front seat. The rear is very cramped for a typical adult.

No, I sat in the 1 series for about 10 minutes as I was not allowed to drive the vehicle.
