E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

Mein Auto: 525i, working on a 318is

Not the greatest looking car. It's got many problems with it, and needs to be stripped and rebuilt.

The Bad:
Won't idle on it's own
Cylinder 3 spark plug gets flooded with oil
Dash don't work, only the fuel and tach do
Paint if you haven't noticed
Shift linkage is extreamly loose
Brakes are seizing up in the front
Smokes....terribly
Suspension is shot
Not even worth mentioning the a/c

The Good:
Car won't pass NJ inspection. SO, I'm gonna strip it and rebuild.

As to what, no idea. Car sat for 2 1/2 years, and has seen better days. Was thinking stock body, and work the mechanics of the car. And maybe a turbo, but my heart is not set on aspiration to begin with

Hey, I've got time.

You wouldn't waste time on it. I would. I have a car, that can not be driven or pass inspection, and been in the family for years. And my whole life, I have been fixing, or modifying cars. This may not be the life you live, but it's the life I live.

I hope the engine oil isn't original?

It IS the life i live too, in fact i do it as a part time bit on the side job, more as a hobby than to make money though. If you werent new the the forum youd know that i buy do up and sell euro cars, mostly BMWs and of those, mostly E30s. FCSteve does the exact same thing in PA. From this experience ive learnt whats worth fixing up, whats good for parts, and whats good for the crusher. im sure steve will agree with me one this. Looking at the state of it, that will be off the road for 6 months at least while you fix it up.

but youll ignore me and others advice, do it anyway, and learn why we said not to in 6 months time when your $4k into it and it still isnt respectable

Not building it back up to drive daily or sunday curises on the road again if that's what you are thinking I'm gonna be doing to it. As far as "respectable" goes, don't give 2 rats what anyone else thinks about it's looks. The goal here is what kind of monster can I make with it. I want a VTEC killer. Not a daily driver or something to take out on a Sunday cruise. I got a 525i for that.

As far as spare money, it comes and goes. All the time. I have a car sitting here, and not being driven or having anything done to it. Might as well do something with it.

Thank you Restoring it is not worth it to these cars unfortunately based on Blue Book Value, and this car is all number matching. Plus I'm doing this for personal reasons, and don't plan on fixin' n flipping. And I don't plan on swaping motors either. I wanna go with what the car came with. And try not to venture away to different parts. It won't be easy. Not at all.

Body wise, its straight. Except the small rust hole by the driver door on the front quarter panel at the bottom, and the bottom front piece where the fog lights would go, where a tow truck driver bent it putting it on the flatbed back in 2000 (Or 99' can't remember). But that's not a big deal to me at the moment. What is is the engine, and what I can do to it keeping the gear ratios and rear end in mind.
