E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

i had planned on doing an e30 hatchback once upon a time.

this was my quick chop of how i was going to do it.

in order to properly chop an e30 into a hatch you need to work the rear pillars to extend them a bit. for the hatch you can mod the mk1 golf hatch to fit. i know, VW parts on a BMW . BUT don't forget about those 2 door e30 tourings made overseas .. all of them used mk1 hatches.

there is a way to make the project work and look good. the problem is .. are you willing to go through all of that for a car that could very well get rear ended the next day and be totaled ?

Fcsteve I don't think it's worth it just to try and do something different.

That does not / will not look good. Even if refined with $100K invested.

the hatchback e30 idea can look good IMO, but id never do it. way too much time and effort into something that will never look as good as a well modded coupe.

my idea in my head of doing it is that it would be following the E36/E46 Compact shape and still having a rear deck of sorts, rather than dropping off after the rear glass, and then having a rear tailgate like a pickup or mini etc, so the glass is fixed in place. im taking a welding course next semester so may be a project.

Agreed on the modded coupe being the Pièce de résistance, but I don't know why anyone would attempt to give an E30 a bobtail. The E36 Ti was a failure because it did not present any real benefit over the coupe, with styling that screamed "Afterthought"! My $.02

i think its more a case of doing it to be different, not because it would look better (or worse)

ya, that was the biggest reason i was going to build it. just to be the only person in the world with 1. as far as the e30 world goes .. everything has been done a thousand times over, so nothing is truly unique .. but an e30 hatchback ? THATS unique. never been done, not by anyone, ever. I quarentee that thing would be on the cover of PBMW and a dozen other magazines before it was even fully finished.

no i dont like any E36 but there has been a few E46 ti's ive been looking at over the last 12 months, but ended up deciding to buy my 316i and spend the change on doing an engine transplant on my E34 instead which is now pretty much finished, just waiting for it to be signed off and legal then all will be revealed!

My E30

My First BMW. I've always wanted an E30 and finally found a good deal. This car was built to stay in Germany. It's a 1985 325 with a 2.7L / 5-speed. It was imported to the US in 1993 by the original owner whom I purchased it from. Awesome car, I've never driven such a well built machine before.

I got my 87 325e in March of this year. Picked her up for $ 1700 on cl, still needs some minor fixes ( speedometer, body work, and a weird idle ) but I've been quite pleased with her. I drive twenty miles each way to work and back about six days a week. My only complaint is no place for a beverage.Click image for larger version
